University of Manitoba (UM) GPA Calculator

The University of Manitoba grades on a letter scale running from A+ (4.5 grade points) down to Fail (0.0 grade points), across eight graded letters — A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D, and Fail — with D as the lowest passing grade (there is no D+).

Each letter carries a fixed grade-point value used to calculate grade point averages: A+ = 4.5, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, Fail = 0.0.

Some courses are graded on a pass/fail basis instead; because no numerical value is assigned to these courses, they do not affect grade point averages, and they are clearly identified in course descriptions and outlines.

Quality Points for a course are the grade point value of the assigned letter grade multiplied by the course's credit hours — for example, 3 credit hours at a grade of "B" (3.0 points) = 3 × 3.0 = 9.0 Quality Points. Your GPA for a given period is the total Quality Points earned divided by the credit hours attempted.

For minimum grade levels, especially where they affect progression requirements, the university directs students to the faculty or school regulations in the Academic Calendar, or to consult an advisor — these can vary by faculty, school, or college.

The University of Manitoba calculates four distinct types of Grade Point Average, each covering a different scope of your coursework:

• Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) — all courses, institutional and transferred, completed at the same level.
• Degree Grade Point Average (DGPA) — all courses accepted for credit by the university towards a designated degree.
• Sessional Grade Point Average (SGPA) — all courses completed at the same level during the Fall and Winter terms of one academic year.
• Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) — all courses completed during a single term at the same level.

Faculties, colleges, and schools may use any of these GPA types to assess student performance.

How repeated courses affect your GPA at the University of Manitoba

If you repeat a course, or take an equivalent or mutually exclusive course, all attempts count toward your Term GPA (TGPA) and Cumulative GPA (CGPA).

For your Degree GPA (DGPA), the highest grade earned is what counts by default — though whether earlier attempts are also factored into your DGPA depends on your specific Faculty, School, or College's policy.

Which grades don't count toward your GPA at the University of Manitoba

Pass/Fail grades carry no numerical value, so they never affect your grade point average.

Two withdrawal designations are also excluded from GPA calculations: Voluntary Withdrawal (VW), a registration option letting you withdraw from a course without academic penalty, and Authorized Withdrawal (AW), an approved withdrawal from all courses in a period for medical or compassionate reasons. Both still appear on your official student record, just not in your GPA.
