Grades Not Calculated in GPA

Alongside the standard A-F letter grades, MCC's catalog lists several notations that a student's transcript may carry but that are not calculated into the grade point average:

  • I (Incomplete) — a temporary grade for work not finished due to circumstances beyond the student's control; work not completed within 45 calendar days of the semester's end (absent an administrative extension) results in a grade of F.
  • W — student- or administrator-initiated withdrawal from a course.
  • X — audit of a course; no credit or performance grade is awarded.
  • S / NC — satisfactory / unsatisfactory completion of non-degree coursework or a credit course graded pass/fail.
  • REPEAT / FRGVN — administrative notations for a repeated or forgiven grade.

All classes numbered below 100 are developmental classes and are not calculated into the College GPA. CLEP test results are also not part of the GPA calculation.

How GPA Is Calculated

Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated using quality points divided by attempted credit hours. Semester GPA reflects only one semester's grades; cumulative GPA reflects all courses taken at MCC.

Repeating Courses: a course may be repeated at regular cost up to two times (a third or later attempt requires academic-dean approval). All attempts remain on the transcript, but only the highest grade is calculated in the cumulative GPA.

Grade Forgiveness Policy: a student may request one-time forgiveness of prior D's or F's for up to 15 credit hours completed within a consecutive 12-month period, after completing 15 consecutive college-level (100-200) credit hours post-forgiveness with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and no individual grade below C, and after at least 12 months have passed since the forgiven term. Forgiven grades remain on the transcript (marked "FRGVN") but are excluded from GPA and credit-hour calculations, and cannot be used to meet graduation requirements or satisfy prerequisites. Granted once per student; grades from other colleges are not eligible.

Dean's List, President's Honor List, and Phi Theta Kappa

Students completing nine or more credit hours with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher are named to the Dean's List; those with a semester GPA of 3.75 or higher are named to the President's Honor List. Both recognitions are offered during fall and spring semesters only.

Phi Theta Kappa (Chi Upsilon Chapter), the international honor society for two-year colleges, invites students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, completed at least 12 college-level credit hours in MCC courses, are currently enrolled in at least one credit hour, and are pursuing an associate's degree, certificate, or baccalaureate transfer program.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MCC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MCC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this McHenry County College (MCC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
