MacEwan University GPA Calculator

MacEwan University utilizes one letter grade system based on the Alberta Common Grading Scheme for the reporting of final grades in credit courses — a 4.0-grade point value system consisting of 12 letter grades and 11 grade points, running from A+ / A (4.0) down to F (0.0). All final grades are recorded using letter grades and converted to the four-point scale to calculate a Grade Point.

The grading system is based on criterion-referenced testing and assessment: student performance is assessed against pre-determined performance levels to ascertain how well each student has learned specific knowledge or skills, rather than being curved against classmates.

Grade Point Values do not apply to all courses — they are not used for English as an Additional Language, University Preparation, Centre for Professional Nursing Education, and other non-credit courses.

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average: the sum of all Grade Points achieved (grade-point value × course credits) divided by the sum of all credits with Grade Point Values attempted. GPA is calculated to three decimal points of precision.

MacEwan tracks several distinct GPAs: Term GPA (a single term's Grade Points over that term's GPV credits, shown on the transcript), Cumulative GPA / CGPA (your entire GPV-credit record at MacEwan, shown on the transcript), Academic Standing GPA / ASGPA (calculated cumulatively across the three terms of an Academic Standing Year, May 1–April 30, for standing decisions — not shown on the transcript), and Graduation GPA / GGPA (Grade Points from only the courses counted toward your program credential — not shown on the transcript).

The minimum grade required to earn credit for a course is D (1.0); some courses require a higher grade to fulfill program requirements, proceed in a program, meet prerequisites, or transfer.

Standing is assessed once a Student has attempted at least 18 credits within an Academic Standing Year (May 1–April 30), with at least 12 of those credits carrying a Grade Point Value:

• Good Standing — an ASGPA of 2.00 or higher.
• Academic Probation — an ASGPA of less than 2.00 and at least 1.30, if the Student was in Good Standing the previous year or is completing an Academic Standing Year for the first time. A permanent notation is added to the transcript. To clear probation, a Student must achieve an ASGPA of at least 2.00 on 18 attempted credits (12+ with GPV) in a subsequent Academic Standing Year, at which point a "cleared probation" notation is added.
• Required to Withdraw (RTW) — applies if any of: ASGPA below 2.00 for two consecutive Academic Standing years; ASGPA below 2.00 in two non-sequential years where the intervening year had no evaluation; ASGPA below 2.00 in any year after returning from a previous RTW, unless five years have passed since that RTW; or ASGPA below 1.30 in any single year regardless of prior standing.

A Student placed on Academic Probation a third time is subject to review and may be Required to Withdraw. Students who are Required to Withdraw may apply to return after 12 months have elapsed, though readmission is not guaranteed.

A minimum Graduation Grade Point Average (GGPA) of 2.00 on the 4.00 scale is required to graduate. For an Honours major, a higher minimum GGPA of 3.00 on the 4.00 scale is required.

Each course completed for credit, or for which transfer credit is granted, may be used only once toward fulfilling any program requirement.

Within an Academic Standing Year, Students enrolled in at least 12 credits per term (at least 12 with GPV) in any two terms can earn Academic Merit recognition, noted on the transcript and by a letter from the Dean:

• Dean's List — ASGPA of 3.70 or higher.
• First Class Standing — ASGPA of at least 3.30 and less than 3.70.

Students on a reduced course load approved by Access & Disability Resources are assessed on the same ASGPA bands using a 6-credit-per-term threshold instead. A grade of Not Completed Requirements (NCR) during the evaluation period makes a Student ineligible for Academic Merit that period.

At graduation, a Graduation GPA (GGPA) of 3.70 or higher earns a credential "with Distinction."

Coursework approved for Transfer Credit is assigned the notation TR. TR carries no grade-point value, so it does not contribute to GPA. It is recorded in MacEwan's student information system, but per policy may not appear on the official transcript.
