How grading works at EMU

EMU grades undergraduates on a 4.0 scale with grade points assigned per credit hour: A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7), D+ (1.3), D (1.0), D- (0.7), and F (0.0). EMU does not award an A+ — A is the highest available grade.

Grades earned with Honors Credit are recorded with an "H" suffix (for example, "A H" or "B-H") at the same point value as the equivalent grade without honors credit.

How your GPA is calculated at EMU

Your GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total credit hours that carry a grade point value, counting only courses taken at EMU. When you repeat a course, only your most recent grade counts toward your cumulative GPA.

Credit/noncredit (CR/NC), pass/fail (S/U), student-teaching (SC/PN/UN), and audited (AUD) grades are not accorded grade point values and do not affect your GPA. Transfer credit is accepted toward your degree but transfer grades are never used to calculate your EMU GPA.

GPA requirements to graduate from EMU

To graduate, you need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in courses taken at EMU, and a minimum 2.0 GPA in your major and your minor separately (only EMU courses applied to the major or minor count toward those GPAs). Some programs require a higher GPA — check with your program advisor.

How transfer credit affects your GPA at EMU

EMU accepts transfer credit from other accredited colleges and universities for courses in which you earned a C (2.0) or better; courses from non-U.S. or non-accredited institutions may be reviewed case by case. Transfer courses count toward your degree, but transfer grades are never used to calculate your EMU GPA — only courses taken at EMU count.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at EMU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at EMU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Eastern Michigan University (EMU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does EMU use plus/minus grading?

Yes. EMU's undergraduate scale runs A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, and F, each with its own grade-point value (4.0 down to 0.0). There is no A+ — A is the highest grade EMU awards.

What does the "H" mean in a grade like "A H" or "B-H" at EMU?

It marks Honors Credit for that course. An Honors-Credit grade carries the same grade-point value as the equivalent non-honors grade — for example, "A H" is worth 4.0, the same as a plain "A."

Do CR, NC, S, U, or audited (AUD) grades affect my GPA at EMU?

No. EMU's catalog states that credits earned in credit/noncredit classes (CR, NC), pass/fail options (S, U), and student-teaching courses (SC, PN, UN) "are not accorded grade point values," and that no grade points are awarded for a class audit (AUD). None of these affect your EMU GPA.

Do Incomplete (I), Withdrawal (W), or "No grade submitted" (N) grades affect my GPA at EMU?

EMU's grade table lists Incomplete (I), Withdrawal (W), and "No grade submitted" (N) at 0.0 grade points per credit hour, and — unlike credit/noncredit, pass/fail, student-teaching, or audited grades — the catalog does not name any of the three among the grades excluded from the GPA computation.
