Ashland University (AU) GPA Calculator

Beyond the standard letter grades, Ashland records several notations that are not calculated into a student's GPA: AU (Audit, no grade or credit), S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory coursework, excluded from the GPA computation), CR (Credit for satisfactory non-academic coursework), K (transfer credit accepted but excluded from the cumulative GPA), W (Withdrawn, not calculated in the GPA), and NG (No Grade reported). An Incomplete (I) is not a final grade in itself — it carries the same GPA weight as a failing grade until the coursework is finished and a grade change is submitted, generally within six weeks of the term's end. A WF may be assigned by the Registrar's Office for a second academic integrity violation.

If a student repeats a course at Ashland, only the last grade earned counts toward the cumulative GPA — every attempt stays on the transcript, but earlier grades are excluded from the GPA calculation. Repeated courses must be taken at Ashland, and a course originally taken for a letter grade must be repeated for a letter grade. Students with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 and 16 earned semester hours may take up to one course per semester on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis (a maximum of seven such courses); coursework taken under this option is not included in the cumulative GPA.

A baccalaureate candidate must complete at least 120 semester hours (60 for an associate degree) with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Bachelor of Science in Education and Music Education majors require an overall GPA of at least 2.50 (other Bachelor of Music degrees do not); a candidate's major-field GPA must be at least 2.25, or 2.50 in certain majors. A degree candidate must also complete a minimum of 30 semester hours (15 for an associate degree) in residence at Ashland University, including the last 12 hours of coursework and at least half of the coursework in the major field.

Each semester, full-time undergraduates with a term GPA of 3.5 or higher who complete at least 12 GPA-bearing credit hours (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory coursework does not count toward this total) are named to the Dean's List. Non-probationary Honors Program sophomores, juniors, and seniors with an Ashland GPA of at least 3.5 may register for up to 21 credit hours without special approval. Valedictorian and salutatorian honors go to the students with the highest and second-highest Ashland University GPA among those with 80 or more institutional credits; degrees with distinction require 50 or more Ashland University credits, and only Ashland University grades count toward either honor.

Transfer credit does not affect a student's Ashland University GPA. Credit accepted in transfer is recorded on the permanent academic record with a 'K' notation but is not included in the cumulative grade point average.
