Longwood University GPA Calculator

Some course enrollments are recorded with a notation instead of a letter grade, and are not calculated in the GPA: AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), NP (Not Passed), P (Pass, equivalent to C or better), and W (Withdrew).

• Incomplete (I): assigned when illness or another good reason has left the semester's work unfinished; if the makeup work is not completed and recorded by the published date in the following regular semester, the grade automatically reverts to F.
• Pass/Fail (P): credit for a course taken on the pass/fail option; the course is excluded from the GPA calculation.
• Audit (AU): non-credit participation with department chair permission; no academic credit is awarded and the course does not count toward GPA hours.
• Withdrawal (W): indicates withdrawal without academic penalty, automatically assigned for withdrawals from the end of the drop period through the 50th day of regularly scheduled classes.

GPA is computed under the Four-Point System: each grade's quality points are multiplied by the course's credit hours, and the total quality points are divided by total GPA hours. The result is stated to the third decimal position and is truncated, not rounded.

Pass/fail courses and grades of I (Incomplete), W (Withdrew), or AU (Audit) are excluded from GPA hours and the GPA calculation. A student's GPA is based only on coursework taken at Longwood; grades from affiliate programs count only if the student registered for them through Longwood.

Students are allowed five course repeats: the original grade is excluded and only the most recent grade counts toward GPA (retaking the same course five times, or five different courses, in any combination). Starting with the sixth repeat, both the original and the new grade count in the GPA calculation, but only the second enrollment counts toward earned hours.

A cumulative GPA below 2.00 automatically places a student on academic probation for the following fall or spring semester; only Longwood coursework counts toward this GPA. Students on probation may not take more than 15 credits per semester.

A student is suspended if: after two consecutive regular (fall/spring) semesters on probation the regular-semester GPA is still below 2.00; or the cumulative GPA falls below 1.00 with 1-44 GPA hours at Longwood; or the cumulative GPA falls below 1.70 with 45 or more GPA hours at Longwood.

The first suspension requires withdrawal for the following semester; the second requires withdrawal for one year; the third results in permanent dismissal. A student readmitted after suspension must enroll under probation, maintain at least a 2.00 semester GPA, and take no more than 15 credits per semester until their cumulative GPA reaches 2.00.

President's List: a semester GPA of 4.000 on a minimum of 12 semester hours taken, with all registered courses for the semester completed and no grade of "I" on the record.

Dean's List: a semester GPA of 3.500-3.999 on a minimum of 12 semester hours taken, with no grade below "C-," all registered courses for the semester completed, and no grade of "I" on the record.
