Other grade notations

Beyond the letter grades A through F, Hostos records several administrative and non-punitive notations on the transcript:

  • AUD (Audit): no credit is given; audited courses do not count toward full-time or part-time status, financial aid, or veteran's benefits, and cannot be changed to a credit-bearing grade.
  • INC (Incomplete): granted when course requirements are mostly met with a passing average; converts to FIN if not completed by the last day of classes of the following semester.
  • W (Withdrawal without penalty): assigned when a student withdraws while doing passing work, prior to the last day of classes.
  • WA: a non-punitive administrative withdrawal for students excluded from class for non-compliance with New York State's immunization law.
  • R (Remedial): a non-punitive grade for developmental/remedial coursework, given when a student has not reached proficiency but met satisfactory enrollment, coursework, and progress standards; limited to one use per course (two for ESL 091/ENG 091/ENG 1399).
  • P (Passing): assigned to SSD 1000 (Freshman Orientation) and COOP 101-103 (Cooperative Education).
  • Z: an administrative placeholder recorded when an instructor has not submitted a grade.

Failing-grade replacement

Under a CUNY-wide policy effective September 1, 1990, an undergraduate who earns a grade of F, FIN, WU, or an administrative failing grade and later retakes the same course, earning a C or better, has the original failing grade excluded from the cumulative GPA (it remains on the transcript). Replacement is capped at 16 failing credits over a student's undergraduate enrollment across CUNY, does not apply to courses taken under e-Permit, and a student may opt out by notifying the Registrar's Office.

The GPA calculated under this replacement policy is used for retention, graduation, and admission to or continuance in a major. It is not used to calculate graduation honors, the Dean's List, or departmental honors at graduation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Hostos Community College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Hostos Community College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Hostos Community College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
