Berkeley City College GPA Calculator

Berkeley City College uses the Peralta Community College District's evaluative and non-evaluative grading symbols, set under Title 5 of the California Administrative Code. The FW symbol (assigned when a student stops participating after the withdrawal deadline) is treated the same as F for GPA, course repetition, and probation/dismissal purposes.

Several other symbols appear on a transcript but are not counted toward the GPA, including I (Incomplete), P (Pass), NP (No Pass), IP (In Progress), RD (Report Delayed), and MW (Military Withdrawal).

Cumulative GPA is computed by dividing the total grade points earned by the total semester units attempted. Units graded Pass/No Pass are not included in the calculation.

Under the Academic Renewal Policy, a student may petition to have up to two semesters or 24 units of substandard grades (D, F, FW, or NP) earned in the Peralta District disregarded from the cumulative GPA, provided at least one year has passed and at least 15 subsequent semester units were completed with a 2.5 GPA or better.

Good standing requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 at the end of any term is placed on academic probation and remains on it until the cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher.

Progress probation applies instead when W, I, and NP grades reach at least 50% of a student's total recorded grades. A student on academic probation is subject to academic dismissal after earning a cumulative GPA below 1.75 in each of three consecutive semesters.

The Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees require a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 and a minimum 2.0 GPA within the general education requirements. A grade of C or better is required in each course used to satisfy the major, English Composition, and Mathematics requirements.

Students completing 12 or more units with a semester GPA of 3.25 or better are placed on the Honor Roll.

Graduates with an overall cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better earn Associate degree honors: "With Honors" (Cum Laude) for 3.25-3.49, "With High Honors" (Magna Cum Laude) for 3.50-3.74, and "With Highest Honors" (Summa Cum Laude) for 3.75-4.0.

An Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all CSU-transferable coursework, though some majors require a higher GPA. All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of C or better, or P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.
