Only A, B, C, D and F carry quality points and count toward the GPA. The following grades are recorded on the transcript but are never used to calculate the GPA: I (Incomplete), L (Instructor Grade Late), N (No Pass), P (Pass), S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), W (Withdrawal), X (Audit), XC (Audit Initiated after Add/Drop) and XW (Withdrawn for Non-Attendance of Student Auditing a Class). Most avocational classes are assigned a grade of NG unless the course requires a record of attendance, in which case an S or XW may be issued instead.

The program of study GPA is determined by dividing total quality points earned by total academic units attempted, including appropriate transfer credit. Only the last attempt of a repeated course counts toward the GPA (third and later attempts are averaged instead), though every attempt remains on the transcript.

Under the Grade Forgiveness Policy, a course in which a grade of C or higher was earned may not be repeated, and a course may be attempted at most three times with only the last grade counted. A fourth attempt requires an academic appeal based on major extenuating circumstances; if granted, both the third and fourth attempt grades are averaged into the GPA. A fifth attempt is not permitted. Grade forgiveness applies only up to the awarding of the degree, and prior-learning or credit-by-exam transfer credits (CLEP, AP, IB, etc.) may not be used to forgive a grade.

An Incomplete (I) is automatically changed to a punitive grade (F, N or U) if not resolved within 30 calendar days after classes begin in the next fall or spring term.

Students in credit programs must maintain a program of study GPA of at least 1.4 for 1-14 academic period units attempted, 1.6 for 15-27 units, 1.8 for 28-45 units, and 2.0 for over 45 units attempted, or be placed on academic probation.

A student who fails to reach the required GPA while on probation is suspended for one academic period; a student who fails again after being readmitted is academically dismissed for one full calendar year. Students readmitted after suspension or dismissal return on academic probation and must meet with an academic advisor before registering.

Students must earn a program of study GPA of 2.0 or higher to graduate from a bachelor's degree, Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or Advanced Technical Certificate/Applied Technology Diploma/College Credit Certificate program. Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) and Certificate of Professional Preparation (CPP) certificate programs require a higher GPA of 2.5 or better in all required program courses.

Full-time students earning a term GPA of 3.8 or higher are named to the President's List; those earning 3.20-3.79 are named to the Dean's List (part-time equivalents apply the same GPA bands to a combined fall/spring GPA with 12 or more accumulated units).

Students graduating with a program GPA of 3.2 or higher receive Latin honors on the transcript and at Commencement: Cum Laude (3.2-3.49), Magna Cum Laude (3.5-3.79), and Summa Cum Laude (3.8-4.0).
