How grading works at GIKI

GIK Institute grades each course with a letter grade — A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, or F — and assigns Grade Points per Credit Hour (GPC) to each. There is no university-wide percentage-to-letter conversion table printed in the handbook; the letter grades and their grade points are listed in the Grade Scale Reference on this page. Grade Points for a course are found by multiplying its GPC by the number of credit hours assigned to that course.

Two additional administrative grades exist: W (Withdrawn) and I (Incomplete) — both carry no credit and are not counted in the GPA calculation. An F grade means the entire course must be repeated to receive any credit.

How GIKI calculates SGPA and CGPA

GIKI reports a Semester GPA (SGPA), obtained by dividing the total grade points earned in a semester by the total credit hours registered for that semester, and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA), obtained by dividing total grade points earned across the entire period of study by the total credit hours undertaken. The maximum possible GPA is 4.00.

  • If a course is repeated, only the most recent grade counts toward the GPA/CGPA — even if it is lower than an earlier attempt — but every attempt still appears on the transcript.
  • A W grade does not require the course to be repeated and is not counted in GPA calculations.

Academic standing, caution, and probation at GIKI

At the end of each semester GIKI assigns a standing based on Semester GPA (SGPA):

  • Caution — SGPA is 2.00 or above, but CGPA is below 2.00.
  • Probation — SGPA falls below 2.00 at the end of a semester; the student is placed on probation for the next semester and may register for only 10–13 credit hours (a reduced load).
  • Warning — SGPA below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters triggers a warning letter from the Examination Section, copied to the student's parents/guardians.
  • Expulsion — SGPA below 2.00 in two consecutive regular semesters results in removal from the Institute's rolls.

A probationer may also register for one repeating course in which they previously obtained an F, D, or D+ grade, provided their CGPA is above 2.00.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from GIKI

To be declared Passed and graduate, a GIKI student must: complete the total credit hours required for their degree (135/136 credit hours for a bachelor's in engineering, including the six-credit senior design project and a non-credit summer internship), reach a CGPA of at least 2.00 at completion, and finish the degree requirements within 4 to 6 years (6 years is the maximum allowed).

Academic distinction tiers at GIKI

GIKI recognizes strong semester performance (for a normal course load or above) in graded tiers based on Semester GPA:

  • Highest Distinction — SGPA between 3.90 and 4.00, inclusive.
  • High Distinction — SGPA between 3.75 and 3.89, inclusive.
  • Distinction — SGPA between 3.50 and 3.74, inclusive.
  • Good — SGPA between 3.00 and 3.49, inclusive.
  • Satisfactory — SGPA between 2.00 and 2.99, inclusive.

Each Faculty also selects students for the Dean's Honors List according to its own prescribed criteria.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at GIKI?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at GIKI?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from GIKI?

You need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 at the completion of your degree requirements, along with finishing all required credit hours within 4 to 6 years.

Does GIKI use a fixed marks-to-grade table?

No. GIKI's handbook lists letter grades and their Grade Points per Credit Hour (see the Grade Scale Reference on this page) but does not print a university-wide percentage band for each grade — each instructor announces their own evaluation weighting during the first lecture of a course.

When is a GIKI student placed on probation?

A GIKI student is placed on probation when their Semester GPA (SGPA) falls below 2.00 at the end of a semester. While on probation, the student must register for a reduced load of 10–13 credit hours the following semester.

If I repeat a course at GIKI, which grade counts?

Only your most recent grade counts toward your GPA/CGPA, even if it is lower than an earlier attempt. Every attempt still appears on your transcript. You cannot repeat a course in which you previously earned C- or better.
