How grading works at Aga Khan University

AKU grades on an absolute numerical scale of 0–100%, applicable to all undergraduate and graduate programmes unless Academic Council approves an exception for a specific programme. Grades are not assigned on a curve or forced distribution — no quota fixes how many students receive a given grade level.

Each numeric score also carries a letter grade, and the letter grade's grade-point weight is what feeds into the Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative GPA (CGPA); the full letter-to-percentage-to-point scale is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page. One grade band, C−, is a special case: it still carries a grade point and counts toward GPA/CGPA, but a course graded C− earns no degree credit — the course must be resat. An F likewise earns no credit and requires repeating the entire course.

How repeating a course affects your GPA at AKU

AKU distinguishes two kinds of course repeat, each with its own rule for what counts toward your GPA:

  • Repeating a passed course by choice (Policy #033): with permission from the academic unit, a student who was awarded C+ or C may repeat that course the next time it is offered. Both attempts appear on the transcript, but only the second grade — whether higher or lower — is used in computing the GPA/CGPA. A course may not be repeated more than once under this policy.
  • Repeating a failed course (Policy #001 §5.4): an F grade requires the student to repeat the entire course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at AKU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at AKU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Aga Khan University (AKU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What is the minimum passing grade at Aga Khan University?

The lowest AKU grade that earns full course credit is C (2.0 grade points, 60–64%). A grade of C− (1.7 points, 55–59%) still counts toward GPA/CGPA but carries no course credit. Anything below 55% is an F (0.0 points), which earns no credit and requires repeating the entire course.

Can you repeat a course you already passed at AKU?

Yes. With the academic unit's permission, a student who received C+ or C may repeat that course the next time it is offered. Only the second grade counts toward the GPA/CGPA (whether it is higher or lower than the first), both attempts show on the transcript, and the course may not be repeated more than once under this policy.

Does AKU have an A+ grade?

Yes. AKU's grading scale includes both A+ (95–100%) and A (90–94%) — both carry the maximum grade point on AKU's 4.0 scale. The full scale appears in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.
