How grading works at IBA Karachi

The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) uses a fixed absolute grading plan adopted by its Academic Board and in effect for all IBA programs since Spring 2010. Each letter grade maps to a fixed percentage band and a grade point on a 0.00–4.00 scale — the exact bands and grade points are shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

Alongside the absolute plan, IBA encourages relative grading: a faculty member may choose either the absolute or a relative scheme for a course and may set the percentages that earn A's, B's and C's, but must disclose the chosen plan in the course outline at the start of the semester. In every case the letter grade converts to the same grade point.

How IBA calculates your CGPA

IBA computes a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at the end of each semester as the credit-hour-weighted average of your grade points:

CGPA = Sum of (credit hours × grade points) ÷ Sum of credit hours

Within a single course, the final grade is built from 60% semester work (term exams, quizzes, assignments, presentations) and 40% the semester final examination. Two term examinations are held per course each semester and both count toward the final grade.

  • Courses graded F are counted in the CGPA.
  • Courses graded W (withdrawn) or I (incomplete), and remedial courses, are not counted toward the CGPA.

Probation and dismissal at IBA

You must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.2 throughout your studies at IBA. Standing is reviewed each semester once you have taken more than five courses:

  • CGPA between 2.0 and 2.2 — a warning (probation) letter is issued and you are placed on probation for one semester; a full-time student must raise the CGPA to 2.2 in the chronologically following semester.
  • CGPA still below 2.2 after improving — you are placed on a second probation; failure to reach 2.2 after the second probation results in being dropped.
  • CGPA below 2.0 — you are dropped from the rolls of the Institute.

No semester break is allowed during probation for full-time students. If you have taken fewer than six courses, no action is taken.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from IBA

To complete a degree at IBA you must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.2 on a cumulative basis. A student who fails some courses but keeps the CGPA at or above 2.2 is allowed to repeat and clear those course(s), or permissible substitutes, before the degree is awarded.

Dean's List and gold medals at IBA

IBA recognizes top academic performers each semester and at graduation:

  • Dean's List — students in the top 5% of the class with a minimum CGPA of 3.5, no grade of C− or lower in any course that semester, and a normal completed course load. Separate lists are maintained for BBA/BS and MBA.
  • Dean's List with Distinction — awarded to those with an academic semester average of 90% or more.
  • Overall Gold Medal (BBA/BS) — the graduating student with the highest CGPA and no failure, provided the CGPA is at least 3.5; a student with a C+ or lower grade in any subject is not eligible.

Repeating a course to improve a grade disqualifies a student from Gold Medal nominations and the Dean's List.

How transfer credits affect your IBA CGPA

A transfer applicant to IBA must have a CGPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. Only courses in which the applicant earned a grade of B or above are considered for credit transfer, and transferred courses are marked as transfer credits on the final transcript.

Grades earned at any of the world's top 100 universities (and at LUMS and IBA's MOU partner universities) are included in the CGPA; where such a transcript shows only letter grades, the mid-point of the letter grade's range is used. Credits from other universities are decided case by case and are not included in the CGPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at IBA?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at IBA?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Institute of Business Administration (IBA) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from IBA?

You must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.2 on a cumulative basis throughout your studies to complete a degree at IBA. A CGPA below 2.0 leads to being dropped from the rolls.

What is the minimum passing grade at IBA?

The lowest passing letter grade at IBA is C−, which requires at least 60%. Anything below 60% is an F (0.00 grade points), which earns no credit. IBA's grade set has no D+ or D grade — see the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

When is an IBA student put on probation?

A student is placed on probation when their CGPA falls between 2.0 and 2.2 (after having taken more than five courses); a warning letter is issued and the CGPA must be brought back to 2.2 the following semester. A CGPA below 2.0 results in being dropped from the Institute.

Does IBA use absolute or relative grading?

IBA's official plan is a fixed absolute grading system (letter grades tied to set percentage bands). However, individual faculty members may opt to grade a course on a relative basis instead, and must state the choice in the course outline at the start of the semester. Either way the letter grade maps to the same grade point.

If I repeat a course at IBA, which grade counts?

You may repeat a course to improve a grade. The better of the two attempts counts toward your CGPA (there is no averaging) and the new grade appears on the transcript; if the repeat attempt is lower, the old grade stands. Repeating a course for improvement makes you ineligible for Gold Medal nominations and the Dean's List.

What CGPA do you need for the IBA Dean's List?

To make the IBA Dean's List you must be in the top 5% of your class with a minimum CGPA of 3.5, have no grade of C− or lower that semester, and have completed a normal course load. A semester average of 90% or more earns the Dean's List with Distinction.
