How grading works at KIET

KIET (PAF-KIET) grades each course on an absolute scale: your percentage marks in a course map to a fixed letter grade and grade point, shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page. KIET uses a compact six-grade set (A down to D) with half-point grade-point steps, and the same scale applies across both the Faculty of Computing & Information Sciences and the Faculty of Management Science.

Each course grade is built from continuous assessment plus a final exam. In Spring and Fall semesters a course has three exams followed by a final exam; in the Summer semester there is one mid-term followed by a final exam. Students also take quizzes and submit term reports. A typical marks break-up is:

  • Quizzes — 10%
  • Assignments / term reports — 15%
  • Mid-term exam — 25%
  • Final exam — 50%

How KIET calculates your GPA

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the sum of the products of grade points and credit hours for each course, divided by the total number of credit hours completed at the Institute. Courses carrying more credit hours therefore weigh more heavily in the average.

The minimum passing grade in a course is C (2.0 grade points). A grade below C does not meet the course-pass requirement even though a D still appears on the transcript with its grade points (see the Grade Scale Reference on this page).

Warning, probation, and dropout at KIET

KIET tracks your cumulative GPA against two thresholds:

  • Warning — issued when your cumulative GPA falls below 2.5, reminding you of the minimum GPA needed for a KIET degree.
  • Probation — applied when your GPA falls below 2.0.
  • Dropped from the roll — if a student on probation fails to raise the grade to the minimum level of 2.0 in the next semester, they are dropped from the roll of the Institute.

What you need to graduate from KIET

To be awarded a KIET degree you must attain at least a 2.5 aggregate GPA (C+) and meet the CGPA floor for your level:

  • 2.0 CGPA for an undergraduate degree.
  • 2.5 CGPA for a graduate degree.

Beyond the CGPA, the award of a degree also requires: completion of all required courses; internship(s) for full-time students; project(s); and a comprehensive examination, which is a mandatory requirement for the award of the degree.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at KIET?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at KIET?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology (KIET) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What is the minimum passing grade at KIET?

You must obtain a minimum grade of C (2.0 grade points) to pass a course at KIET. A grade below C does not satisfy the course-pass requirement.

What CGPA do you need to graduate from KIET?

You need a 2.0 CGPA for an undergraduate degree and a 2.5 CGPA for a graduate degree, plus at least a 2.5 aggregate GPA (C+), together with completing all required courses, internship(s), project(s), and the comprehensive examination.

When is a KIET student placed on probation?

You are placed on probation when your GPA falls below 2.0. A cumulative GPA below 2.5 triggers a warning first. If you cannot raise your grade back to the 2.0 level in the next semester while on probation, you are dropped from the roll of the Institute.

Does KIET use relative grading?

No. KIET uses an absolute grading scheme: your percentage marks map to a fixed letter grade and grade point, as listed in the Grade Scale Reference on this page — grades are not assigned by comparing you against your class cohort.

How is a course grade calculated at KIET?

A course grade combines continuous assessment with a final exam. In Spring and Fall semesters a course has three exams and a final exam; in Summer there is one mid-term and a final exam. A typical weighting is quizzes 10%, assignments/term reports 15%, mid-term exam 25%, and final exam 50%. The resulting percentage maps to a letter grade via the Grade Scale Reference on this page.
