How Grading Works at Alliant

Alliant awards letter grades from A through F, with plus and minus variants used when performance falls between two categories. An A+ may appear in some courses but is not recognized as a valid grade for GPA purposes and is not recorded on the transcript. Many courses instead use Credit/No Credit or Pass/Fail marks, and some graduate courses add a narrative evaluation alongside the grade or credit mark.

How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points earned by the total number of units undertaken. Courses graded CR, CT, I, IN, IP, MP, NC, NR, W, or AU are excluded from the calculation, and transfer units are never counted toward the Alliant GPA. Students may retake up to four separate courses (once each) during a program to improve their record; when a course is repeated, the higher grade earned is used in the GPA, and both the original and repeated grades remain on the transcript.

Academic Standing

Good Academic Standing requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the undergraduate level and 3.0 or higher at the graduate and credential level, along with timely progress toward the degree. A student who falls below the required cumulative GPA at the end of a session is placed on Academic Warning; if the GPA is not raised above the minimum the following session, the student is placed on Academic Probation.

Graduation Requirements

Degree candidates must be in good academic standing to participate in commencement; undergraduate and master's students must also have completed at least 80% of their required units by the end of the spring term/session to take part in the ceremony. All degree requirements must be completed within 365 days of the student's last date of attendance for the degree to be conferred.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

Undergraduate students carrying a full-time load whose session GPA reaches 3.5 or higher earn a Dean's List designation on their transcript, based on quality units only (Credit/No Credit coursework does not count toward eligibility). Graduating seniors who meet the required cumulative GPA and unit thresholds graduate with Latin honors: Cum Laude (3.50-3.69), Magna Cum Laude (3.70-3.89), or Summa Cum Laude (3.90-4.00). Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude require at least 36 semester units completed at Alliant; Summa Cum Laude requires at least 45.

Transfer Credit

Transfer credit requires a minimum grade of B or higher for graduate coursework (Pass/Fail and Credit/No Credit courses must be evaluated as equivalent to a B or higher) and C or higher for undergraduate coursework, though a D may be accepted if a higher-level course in the same sequence was later completed with a C or better. Transfer credit is capped at 20% of units for most master's and credential programs, 30 semester credits for doctoral programs, and 90 semester units (with sub-limits on Associate's-degree and non-traditional units) for bachelor's programs. Transfer grades and grade points are never included in the Alliant GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Alliant International University?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Alliant International University?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Alliant International University GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
