How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is calculated as total grade points earned divided by total credit hours attempted (for example, 45 grade points ÷ 15 credit hours attempted = 3.0 GPA).

An Incomplete ("I") grade is not included in GPA. If the coursework is not completed by the end of the fourth week of the next semester/term, the "I" changes to an "F," which is included in the GPA.

When a course is repeated, both attempts are included on the transcript and in the GPA computation, including an earlier "F" even if the course was later passed. If a course is not designated as repeatable for credit in the catalog, the repeat grade still counts in the GPA, though no additional degree credit is earned.

Undergraduate students may request up to two grade substitutions. A substitution that results in a "W" or "F" still counts as one of the two allowed, and a resulting "F" replaces the original grade in the cumulative GPA even if the original grade was passing. Graduate students are not eligible for grade substitution.

A Pass/Fail grading option is available to degree-seeking undergraduates who have earned at least 28 credit hours and are not on probation, for a maximum of 12 credit hours (up to 4 per semester). A "P" does not affect GPA; an "F" earned under this option affects GPA as a regular failing grade. The option is not available to graduate students.

Minimum GPA to Avoid Academic Action

Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to avoid adverse academic action.

Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to avoid adverse academic action.

Graduate students do not receive "C-," "D+," "D," or "D-" grades in graduate courses; any grade below "C" in a graduate course is recorded as "F." This rule does not apply to graduate students enrolled in undergraduate courses.

GPA Requirements to Graduate

Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to qualify for graduation. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to qualify for graduation.

For all bachelor’s degrees, students must maintain a minimum "C" (2.0) average for all coursework taken at JU, a "C" (2.0) average in the major, and a "C" (2.0) average in the minor. Freshman English (ENGL 103) requires a minimum grade of "C-" (1.67).

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at JU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at JU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Jacksonville University (JU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
