Loyola University Maryland GPA Calculator

A student may repeat any course; all grades for a repeated course are included with the original grade in the cumulative QPA (both original and repeat count). A student repeating a Loyola course at another institution keeps the original grade on the transcript — the transfer grade is not computed in the Loyola cumulative QPA.

A maximum of two grades of D, D+, U, or F (plus certain co-requisite courses) may be "forgiven" during a student's Loyola career. The credits and grade points for a forgiven course are removed from the cumulative QPA computation, though the grade remains on the transcript marked with an "X" prefix; the semester QPA is unaffected. Grade forgiveness is unavailable for Honor Code violations.

To remain in good academic standing, first-year and transfer students must have a cumulative QPA of at least 1.800 at the end of their first and second semesters; from the third semester onward, a cumulative QPA of at least 2.000 is required.

A student whose QPA is below 1.800 after the first semester (with no more than two grades of F in courses of 3 or more credits) is placed on academic probation. A student with a QPA below 1.800 and three or more F grades in courses of 3 or more credits after the first semester is dismissed. After the third semester or later, a cumulative QPA below 2.000 may result in probation or dismissal.

A cumulative quality point average (QPA) of 2.000 is required for graduation from the University. The grade of C (2.000) is the standard for graduation; a C- (1.670) is considered an unsatisfactory grade for this purpose.

Dean's List recognition is awarded each semester to students who achieve a minimum QPA of at least 3.500 for the term while completing at least 12 credits applicable to a degree (excluding pass/fail, S/U, and W-graded courses).

Latin honors at graduation are based on cumulative QPA, taken to three decimal places and not rounded up: summa cum laude requires 3.800 or higher; magna cum laude, between 3.700 and 3.799; cum laude, between 3.500 and 3.699.

A letter grade of C (2.000) or higher must be earned for any course to transfer to Loyola; only the credits transfer, and the grade itself does not count in the Loyola QPA. Courses graded C- or below are not transferable.
