Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) GPA Calculator

A grade-point average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total quality points earned by the total credit hours attempted. Only the letter grades A, B, C, D, and F carry quality points and count toward the GPA.

Pass (P), No Pass (NP), Satisfactory (S), Unsatisfactory (U), Audit (AU), Incomplete (I), Transfer Credit (T), Withdrawal (W and WF), military physical-education credit (USF), and all prior-learning or examination credit codes (Advanced Placement, CLEP, credit by exam, and similar) are not included in the GPA computation. An Incomplete converts to an F if course requirements are not finished by the end of the sixth week of the following term.

A student who has already earned a grade of D or higher, or a P grade, in a course may repeat it once more for credit and improved GPA; when an identical course is repeated, the highest grade earned is used in the cumulative GPA, though credit is only awarded once. Repeated F grades work the same way: the highest grade counts toward the GPA once a passing grade is earned, but credit is still awarded only once. P and NP grades never count toward the GPA regardless of repeats. An Include/Exclude symbol is noted on the transcript to show which attempt counts.

A student is placed on academic probation when cumulative GPA falls below a threshold that scales with credits attempted: 0.75 for 0-11 credits, 1.50 for 12-29 credits, 1.75 for 30-50 credits, and 2.00 for 51 or more credits attempted. A student remains on probation until reaching the applicable threshold, as long as their term GPA stays at 2.00 or higher.

Dismissal follows once a student has attempted 12 or more credits, has been on probation for two consecutive semesters, and both their cumulative GPA is below the applicable threshold and their term GPA is below 2.00. A first dismissal bars enrollment for one semester; a second or later dismissal bars enrollment for two semesters. Readmitted students must meet with a counselor, complete an academic plan, and maintain a 2.0 GPA in their first courses back.

The Dean's List recognizes students who earn a GPA of 3.50 or higher while completing 12 or more credit hours in a term.

Associate degree candidates graduate with honors based on cumulative GPA: Cum Laude for 3.50-3.69, Magna Cum Laude for 3.70-3.89, and Summa Cum Laude for 3.90-4.00. Honors designations are based solely on Tri-C coursework, including grades recalculated or forgiven under other policies.

Transfer credit accepted from another institution is not included in the computation of a student's cumulative GPA. Prior-learning and examination credit (Advanced Placement, CLEP, credit by exam, apprenticeship and military transfer credit, and similar) likewise carries no quality points and is excluded from the GPA.

Students may elect up to 12 credits as Pass/No Pass to fulfill degree requirements; a P grade represents a course grade of A, B, or C, and an NP grade represents a D or F, but neither counts toward the GPA. Health-careers and nursing prerequisite or core courses require a traditional letter grade and cannot be taken Pass/No Pass. A Pass/No Pass election cannot later be converted back to a letter grade.
