How Grades Are Assigned
Grades are assigned by instructors based on measures such as exams, written exercises, performance assessments, and mastery of course skills. Letter grades carry the following meanings: A is exceptional, indicating superior achievement; B indicates commendable mastery; C indicates satisfactory, average mastery; D indicates substandard progress; E (UVU's failing grade, used in place of "F") indicates inadequate mastery or repeated absences.
Some grades are not computed in the GPA: W (Official Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), AU (Audit), CR (Credit Granted), NC (No Credit Granted), CEU (Noncredit–Continuing Education Unit), and T (In Progress/Temporary Status).

GPA Calculation and Repeats
GPA is calculated by dividing total grade points earned (credit hours × grade points) by the number of semester hours attempted.
Repeating a course in which the initial grade was passing earns no additional credit unless the course is designed to be repeated for credit. For other repeated courses, the highest grade earned is used in the GPA calculation; all attempts remain on the transcript, marked Excluded or Included.
An Incomplete (I) grade is not calculated in the GPA and must be resolved within one year, or it converts to an E.

Academic Standing
A student with both a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) is in good academic standing. Falling below 2.0 triggers progressive intervention: academic warning, academic notice, continued academic notice, academic suspension (minimum one full semester), and ultimately academic dismissal (minimum one full calendar year) for students who do not meet the conditions set at each stage.

Transfer Credit
College credit at UVU may come from UVU coursework, transfer credit from other accredited institutions, or Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) awarded for demonstrated college-level knowledge and skills. Transfer transcripts are evaluated and articulated according to equivalencies determined by UVU faculty or the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE).
