Cumulative GPA is calculated by multiplying the achievement-point value of each grade by the number of credits for that course, then dividing the total achievement points by the total credits carried. Only grades earned at Farmingdale State College are included in the computation.

Grades of I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), and UW (Unofficial Withdrawal) carry no achievement-point value and are not factored into the GPA.

A course must be repeated to replace a grade that is failing (F), falls below a program's minimum required grade, indicates non-attendance (N), or indicates withdrawal (W or UW); students may repeat a course once (two attempts total) without special permission. The most recent grade becomes the official grade for the course, but for courses repeated at Farmingdale both achievement points and credits from every attempt are applied to the degree; for courses repeated at another institution, only the credits (not achievement points) transfer in.

Under the Amnesty Policy, a returning student who has not attended any college for at least four years and whose GPA is below 2.0 can have all prior grades excluded from subsequent GPA calculations (though they remain on the transcript); the GPA restarts from the point studies resume, and courses with a grade of C or better still count toward graduation.

A student is in good academic standing when above the level for probation. Students who fail to obtain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in any semester are automatically placed on academic probation; a student placed on probation for two consecutive semesters (excluding summer/winter intersession) is subject to suspension for the following semester.

First-year, first-semester students with a GPA below 2.0 are instead placed on Academic Warning under the Freshman Forgiveness Policy and must complete an Action Plan before a registration hold is released; they follow the standard probation/suspension policy thereafter.

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 is required to graduate, along with a grade of C or better in EGL 101 (Composition I) and EGL 102 (Composition II), and a Writing Intensive course with a grade of C or better for baccalaureate programs.

Baccalaureate candidates must complete a minimum of 30 of their last 60 credits at Farmingdale, including 15 credits in the major (at least 9 at the 300/400 level); associate-degree candidates must complete 15 of their last 30 credits in residence.

Full-time matriculated students earn Dean's List with a semester average of 3.30 or better, or President's List at 3.75 or better; any failing, incomplete, D, D+, W, UW, or N grade in the semester disqualifies a student from either list. Part-time students qualify similarly after completing 18 credits within three consecutive semesters.

Latin Honors at graduation require a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher for Cum Laude, 3.70 or higher for Magna Cum Laude, and 3.90 or higher for Summa Cum Laude, subject to a residency requirement of the last 30 credits.

Courses from regionally accredited institutions are generally accepted for transfer with a grade of C or better, though some majors require C+ or better for a transferred course to satisfy a major requirement; credit from other institutions is evaluated case by case. Transfer and Prior Learning Assessment credit is applied toward the degree but carries no achievement points and is not averaged into the Farmingdale cumulative GPA.
