How Your GPA Is Calculated at AAMU

Grade points are multiplied by the credit hours for each course to get quality points earned; quality points are totaled and divided by total hours attempted to produce the GPA.

  • Grades of I (incomplete), IP (in progress), P (satisfactory completion), W (withdrew), WB (withdrew bankrupt), and WM (withdrew military) carry no quality points and are not included in the GPA.
  • Grades earned at another institution are not computed in an AAMU GPA and cannot be used to raise it or remove a quality-point deficiency, except for work taken through the Visiting Student Program.
  • Students may repeat a course to improve their GPA; only the highest grade earned counts toward the GPA, and credit is allowed only once. Every grade remains on the transcript.
  • A grade of "F" can be replaced in the GPA only by repeating and passing the course at AAMU — the F itself stays on the transcript.

Academic Warning, Probation & Suspension

An undergraduate student is expected to maintain a cumulative GPA matching their earned credit hours: 1.50 once they reach 24-30 hours, 1.75 for 31-63 hours, and 2.00 beyond 63 hours.

  • Falling short at the end of the first semester triggers an official Academic Warning from the Registrar; while on warning, enrollment is capped at 12 semester hours.
  • Falling short of the classification standard afterward places a student on Academic Probation, stamped on the transcript, with the same 12-hour enrollment cap and a two-semester grace period to recover the required GPA.
  • Failure to recover the required GPA within the two-semester grace period results in Academic Suspension.

Residency Requirement for Graduation

At least 25% of the credit hours required for a program, and at least 50% of the credit hours required in the major, must be completed through coursework offered by AAMU (the major-coursework share may be reduced only with department chair approval).

Academic Honors at AAMU

Semester honors are based on GPA in the regular academic program (minimum 12 semester hours, no transitional courses):

  • President's Medallion — cumulative GPA of 3.70 or higher, minimum 30 credits and sophomore status: Gold (4.00), Silver (3.80–3.99), Bronze (3.70–3.79).
  • Freshman President's Award — 4.00 GPA in a freshman's first semester.
  • Dean's List — cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above for two consecutive semesters with no grade below "C".
  • Freshman Dean's List — 3.00 GPA or above after a first-time freshman's first semester.
  • Honor Roll — semester GPA of 3.00 or better with no grade below "C".

Graduation honors are based on cumulative GPA: Cum Laude (3.00–3.49), Magna Cum Laude (3.50–3.79), and Summa Cum Laude (3.80 or above, requiring at least three years in residence at AAMU).

Transfer Credit and GPA

Grades earned at another institution are not computed in an AAMU GPA. To transfer, a student must have maintained a "C" average and good standing at the sending institution — students on academic probation or suspension there are not accepted.

A transferred course only counts if the grade earned meets the receiving program's own minimum grade requirement for that course (for example, some programs require a "C" or better in specific courses even where a "D" would otherwise pass elsewhere).

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at AAMU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at AAMU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
