Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) GPA Calculator

IIT Bombay uses a letter-grade system with no institute-wide percentage-to-grade table for regular coursework — each course instructor sets their own evaluation weighting and grade cut-offs, and only the resulting letter grade and its Grade Point are recorded centrally.

The Rules & Regulations print 17 letter-grade labels, but only nine are final, GPA-bearing grades that count toward your Semester Performance Index (SPI) and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI): AP, AA, AB, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD, and FR. The rest — FF, DX, W, AU, PP, NP, II, DR — are explicitly administrative, placeholder, or index-excluded grades under the rulebook's own wording, not scored results.

A course is passed with any grade from AP down to DD (or AU for an audited course); it is failed with FR or DX. AP and AA both carry the same top grade point, but AP is a distinct, restricted grade — reserved for exceptional performance in courses with more than 50 registered students, capped at 2% of that course's strength, and never awarded for projects or seminars.

IIT Bombay reports a Semester Performance Index (SPI) and a Cumulative Performance Index (CPI), both credit-hour weighted and expressed on the same grade-point scale as the letter grades:

• SPI — the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all courses registered for that semester, weighted by each course's credits.
• CPI — calculated the same way, cumulatively, across every semester since admission.

Both are calculated to two decimal places. A failed course's grade (FR) enters the calculation as a literal zero in the numerator — it is not dropped from either the numerator or the denominator, so a fail pulls your index down rather than being excluded outright.

The Rules & Regulations do not publish a CPI-to-percentage conversion formula anywhere. IIT Bombay transcripts and degree certificates report the CPI itself, with no percentage equivalent and no class of degree ("first class," "distinction," etc.) shown at all.

Academic standing. At the end of each regular semester, students are placed into one of six categories based on CPI and any outstanding FR/DX/DR/W grades in core courses: Category I (CPI at least 8, no outstanding core-course FR/DX/DR/W), Category II (CPI below 8, same clean record), and Categories III–V for students carrying course backlogs or short of the minimum-credit requirement. Your category sets your maximum permitted course load for the next semester, from 54 credits (Category I) down to 24 credits.

Repeating a failed or dropped course. A course graded FR, W, DR, or DX must be registered for again as a "backlog" — core courses are generally offered every semester so a backlog can typically be cleared the following term. Once a course is passed, though, it cannot be repeated: students are "not permitted to re-register for course(s) which they have already passed," so there is no route to improve a passing grade after the fact.

Academic Rehabilitation Programme (ARP). A student who accumulates FR/DX grades worth 36 or more credits in core courses is moved into the ARP (Category VI, which overrides every other category), where a dedicated ARP Faculty Adviser manually approves a reduced course load of up to 24 credits. Reducing outstanding FR/DX credits back below 36 returns the student to regular status; failing to exit the ARP after three consecutive semesters may lead to termination of registration.

The Rules & Regulations set no separate minimum CPI figure for graduation. Instead, conferment of the B.Tech./B.S./Dual Degree requires a student to have passed every course prescribed under the general institute and departmental requirements — and since the lowest passing grade (DD) already carries 4 grade points, every graduate's CPI is, by construction, built entirely from passing course grades.

Beyond passing every course, conferment also requires: satisfactorily completing the non-credit requirements (one of NCC, NSO, or NSS, graded Pass/Not Pass, plus any practical training, seminar, or project components specified for the discipline); clearing all Institute dues; and having no pending case of indiscipline.

Honours is a credit-based credential, not a CPI-based one: a student earns it by completing 24 extra credits of prescribed coursework in their own discipline, on top of the regular degree requirements. It appears on both the degree certificate ("…with Honours") and the transcript — but the rulebook is explicit that Honours is not indicative of class; IIT Bombay transcripts and degree certificates never show a class of degree at all, only the CPI.

A Minor works the same way in a different discipline: 30 additional credits, awarded only if all 30 are completed within the programme's stipulated time, with seats in oversubscribed minor courses allotted by applicant CPI.

IIT Bombay also awards Medals and Academic Prizes each year, but their eligibility rules and CPI/rank criteria are published in a separate rules document, not within the UG Rules & Regulations itself.

IIT Bombay's rulebook does not describe transferring credits in from another degree-granting university at admission; the only external-credit pathway it defines is for currently-enrolled students taking courses outside IIT Bombay — via NPTEL, SWAYAM, or a Semester Exchange programme, with prior approval from the Departmental UG/PG Committee.

Such courses count only toward your credit total: whatever grade is earned in them is excluded from SPI/CPI and recorded on the transcript as-is. A Faculty Adviser converts a foreign institute's grade to IIT Bombay's scale for transcript purposes, but that converted grade still does not feed into the index.
