SPPU's Engineering programmes (B.E./B.Tech, Faculty of Science & Technology) use an absolute grading system: your letter grade is set by fixed percentage cut-offs published in the university's own Rules and Regulations, not by how your class performs — there is no curve.

The scale runs from O down to F across seven graded bands, each a clean ten-point slice of your combined In-Semester and End-Semester marks: 90–100% for O, down through 40–49% for E, with anything below 40% graded F. To pass a Theory course you need at least 40% in the End-Semester exam and at least 40% overall (In-Semester plus End-Semester combined); Term Work, Practical, and Oral/Presentation heads each need at least 40% on their own.

Two administrative grades sit outside this marks-based scale and carry no grade points: FX (Detained — awarded for insufficient attendance or unsatisfactory Term Work performance, and bars the student from that semester's End-Semester exam for the course) and IC (Incomplete Course — absent for the exam but continuing in the course). Audit courses are graded separately as AC (Completed) or ACN (Not Completed) and are never counted toward grade point or CGPA.

SPPU reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) for each semester and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) across the whole programme, both credit-weighted:

• SGPA is the weighted average of the grade points earned in every course, seminar, and project registered for that semester.
• CGPA is the weighted average across all semesters completed so far — first through eighth semester for students admitted directly into First Year, or third through eighth for students admitted directly into Second Year.

Both figures are rounded to two decimal places. If you pass a previously failed course, or improve a course you'd already passed, the new grade replaces the earlier one in your SGPA/CGPA calculation — the rule doesn't specify keeping whichever grade is higher, only that the latest result supersedes the earlier one.

Failing a course. An F grade must be cleared by re-appearing for the examination; End-Semester-only re-appearance retains your existing In-Semester marks, or (depending on whether the course falls in an Odd or Even semester) you may retake both components in that same type of semester. Project Work failed at any stage requires additional work as directed by the examiners before re-appearing.

Detention (FX). A student who doesn't meet the minimum attendance requirement, or performs unsatisfactorily in Term Work, is awarded FX for that course — barred from the End-Semester exam and required to re-register for the course. Neither an F nor an FX earns any credit for the course.

Promotion between years (ATKT — Allowed to Keep Term). To register for Second Year (3rd semester), a student needs at least 50% of First Year's total credits. Third Year (5th semester) requires at least 50% of Second Year's credits plus all of First Year's credits. Final Year (7th semester) requires at least 50% of Third Year's credits plus all of Second Year's credits.

The Bachelor's degree (B.E./B.Tech) is awarded once a student earns all 170 credits of the programme and clears every mandatory non-credit course scheduled in its respective semester (Environmental Studies, Indian Constitution, Essence of Indian Traditional Knowledge, Financial Management, and any others introduced by the university or apex bodies from time to time).

SPPU's own Rules and Regulations state this completion requirement purely in credit-count terms — the source does not print a separate minimum-CGPA floor for degree completion.
