How grading works at University of Calcutta
University of Calcutta uses an absolute, 10-point grading system: your letter grade and grade point are set entirely by your own marks percentage in a paper against fixed cut-offs published in the university's Examination Regulations — there is no curve or cohort adjustment.
What makes Calcutta's scale unusual is that the grade point is not a single fixed number per letter grade. Instead, once a student clears the 30% qualifying mark, the grade point is generated by a continuous formula: grade point = 3.0 + 0.1 × (marks% − 30). So within a single letter grade — say B+, which covers 60% up to (but not including) 70% — a student scoring 60% earns a 6.0 grade point while a student scoring 69% earns 6.9, even though both are labelled B+ on the transcript. A student below 30% marks in a paper is graded F, worth 0 grade points outright, independent of the formula.

How University of Calcutta calculates SGPA and CGPA
Calcutta reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both credit-weighted:
- SGPA = the weighted average of the numerical grade points earned in every paper of that semester, weighted by each paper's credits — shown on the mark sheet to three decimal places.
- CGPA = the weighted average of a student's SGPAs across all six semesters (or across 2/4 semesters for students exiting early), weighted by each semester's total credits — shown to three decimal places.
SGPA is only calculated once a student has cleared the qualifying marks (30%) in every paper of that semester; otherwise it is recorded as "NA".
For final-degree classification only (not for individual papers), Calcutta also converts a student's overall CGPA to a descriptive Letter Grade:

Attendance, repeats, and re-examination at Calcutta
Attendance. Students attending at least 75% of classes are cleared to sit the Semester End Examination outright. Attendance of 60% up to 75% still qualifies, subject to paying a condonation fee. Below 60% attendance, a student is not allowed to appear for that semester's examination.
Qualifying marks. To earn credit for a paper, a student must separately secure at least 30% in both the Theory and the Practical/Tutorial component of that paper, wherever both apply.
Failing and re-appearing. A student who fails to secure qualifying marks in one or more papers may still attend the next higher semester's classes, and re-appears in the failed paper(s) alongside that higher semester's examinations. If a student clears the Practical/Tutorial component of a paper but fails the Theory component (or vice versa), the marks in the cleared component are retained — only the failed component needs to be re-attempted.
Grace marks. A student who falls short of the qualifying mark in any paper or component by exactly one mark is awarded one grace mark to clear it.
Re-examination/review. Available only for non-MCQ Theory papers, up to 2 papers/components per semester, and only if the student has already cleared the qualifying 30% in their remaining papers. If a re-examination changes the mark by more than +15% or more than −5% against the original, a third examiner adjudicates and the average of the two closer marks is used — but a revision is never applied if it would lower the student's Letter Grade.
