JMI's Ordinance 15-B is marks-based: every theory course combines Internal Assessment (40% weight) and the Semester-End Examination (60% weight) into 100-point-scale marks, rounded to the nearest whole number before a letter grade is assigned (for laboratory courses, Internal Assessment and the University Examination are weighted 50/50 instead). Each component also carries its own floor — a student must score at least 40% in Internal Assessment and 40% in the Semester-End Examination separately; falling short in Internal Assessment — even after one make-up chance before the Semester-End Examination — bars the student from that session's Semester-End Examination, and they may only re-attempt it in a later odd/even semester once they've passed Internal Assessment in the course.

Letter grades run on a 10-point scale from O (Outstanding, the top grade) down to F (Fail, worth zero) — eight performance bands in total, plus an administrative Ab (Absent) entry that also carries zero grade points but reflects non-participation rather than an assessed mark. The ordinance sets out this letter/grade-point structure but, unusually, does not publish the marks-percentage cut-offs that map to each letter — only the letter-to-grade-point table itself is printed. Students taking audit courses receive only a Pass/Fail outcome, with no credits attached.

JMI reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both on the same 0–10 scale as the per-course grade points, and both credit-weighted:

• Each course first earns a Credit Point: grade point × the course's credit value.
• SGPA = the sum of (credits × grade point) across a semester's courses, divided by that semester's total credits.
• CGPA = the sum of (credits × SGPA) across every semester taken so far, divided by the total credits taken across all semesters.

Both figures are rounded to two decimal places on the transcript. One rule is easy to miss: grades earned in compulsory courses are excluded from the SGPA/CGPA calculation entirely — unless the University has expressly said otherwise for that course — with one standing exception written into the ordinance itself: Compulsory Urdu and General English grades are counted toward SGPA and CGPA every semester.

For students who exit early, CGPA is computed only over the semesters actually completed: Semesters I–II for the UG Certificate, Semesters I–IV for the UG Diploma. JMI also publishes its own CGPA-to-percentage formula for degree completion — unusual, since India's UGC does not mandate one nationally: Percentage = 10 × CGPA (a completing CGPA of 7.50 converts to 75%).

Passing a course. The lowest passing grade overall is P (grade point 4); an F means the student is declared failed in that course. Within each course, Internal Assessment and the Semester-End Examination each carry their own separate grade floor of C (grade point 5), on top of the 40% marks floor each component also requires.

Promotion between semesters. Promotion from an odd to an even semester is automatic (attendance permitting). But three checkpoints gate progress further: moving from the 2nd to the 3rd semester requires having passed at least half (50%) of all compulsory-and-optional courses taken across the 1st and 2nd semesters combined; moving from the 4th to the 5th, and from the 6th to the 7th, each require three-quarters (75%) of all courses taken up to that point. (Science and Life Science faculties count this against Theory courses only; Fine Arts additionally requires clearing every Practical course of the two semesters just completed.) A student who falls short at one of these checkpoints is declared failed for that semester but may reappear as an 'Ex-Student,' sitting only the specific course(s) not yet passed.

Repeating for improvement. A student may attempt to improve their marks in up to two Theory courses, but only in the immediately following odd/even semester examination, and only once per course — no further improvement attempts are allowed under any circumstances. Unlike universities where the better of the two attempts counts, at JMI only the improvement-examination grade is used for the final division/grade.

Compartment examinations. Students who fail in their final year (or final two semesters) may sit a Compartment Examination held after the regular final exam — but this option does not exist after the 2nd, 4th, or 6th semester.

Attendance-driven cancellation. A student re-admitted once for shortage of attendance whose attendance again falls short a second time has their admission cancelled outright.

To be declared 'passed' and complete a Certificate, Diploma, or Bachelor's Degree programme, a JMI student needs the minimum passing grade in every course individually, and an overall CGPA of at least 5.00 (out of 10.00).

Each exit level under the four-year structure also carries its own minimum credit total: 44 credits for the UG Certificate (1 year), 84 credits for the UG Diploma (2 years), 120 credits for the 3-Year UG Degree, and 160 credits for the 4-Year UG Degree (Honours) — the Honours-with-Research variant also needs 160 credits, at least 12 of which must come from a research project/dissertation.

The standard eight-semester (four-year) programme must be completed within a maximum of seven academic years (14 semesters), including any gaps or unattended semesters/years.

On graduation, JMI awards a Division based on CGPA (maximum CGPA of 10 as the base): First Division with Distinction at CGPA 8.5 and above, First Division from 6.5 up to 8.5, Second Division from 5.5 up to 6.5, and Pass without Division from 4.0 up to 5.5.

Continuing into the 4-Year UG Degree (Honours with Research) track is itself CGPA-gated: students already on the four-year programme need a CGPA of 8.5 or above across their first six semesters to choose the research stream in year four (Table-1 separately notes this same track requires 75% marks and above across the first six semesters), while a student entering the fourth year laterally after a separate 3-Year UG Degree needs a CGPA of at least 7.5 on that degree.

Successful students are also ranked, university-wide, by the CGPA obtained within the programme's minimum prescribed duration; ties are broken first by grades in Theory courses, and if still tied, the students share the same rank.
