Grading System
A plus/minus grading system was adopted beginning fall 2009 and applies to grades of A, B, C and D. WSU does not award an A+ — the scale's top grade is a plain A (4.000).
Passing grades are A, B, C, D, Cr, CrE, Bg and S. The grades F, NCr, NBg and U indicate the work must be repeated to earn credit.

How the GPA Is Calculated
GPA is computed by dividing total credit points by total credit hours completed for which a regular letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) is assigned. The grades Au, W, I, IP, Cr, NCr, S, U, Bg, NBg and CrE are always excluded from the calculation.
Four GPAs can appear on a transcript: Semester GPA, Total WSU GPA, Transfer GPA and Overall GPA. GPAs are calculated to three decimal places (truncated), though only two decimal places print on the official transcript.
Hours with a grade preceded by "Z" (remedial courses, non-accepted transfer courses, or academic-forgiveness/repeat cases) are excluded from GPA, attempted hours and earned hours alike.

Frequently asked questions
What grading scheme does Wichita State University (WSU) use?
Where does this WSU grade scale come from?
Can I repeat a course to improve my WSU GPA?
Yes. Any course may be repeated, but no course may be attempted more than three times (audits and withdrawals don't count as attempts). The grade from a repeat taken at WSU automatically replaces up to two previous grades for that course in the overall GPA. A grade earned at another institution cannot replace a WSU grade the same way — it is averaged into the GPA instead.

Does Wichita State give an A+ grade?
No. WSU's plus/minus system, adopted fall 2009, applies to A, B, C and D, but there is no A+ tier — A is the top grade and is worth 4.000 grade points.
