Grades Not Calculated in the GPA

Withdrawal (W), Satisfactory Progress (X, developmental English/Math only), Incomplete (I), Audit (AU) and Pass (P, developmental courses only) carry no grade points and are not counted in computing a student's grade point average. An Incomplete not resolved within four weeks of the end of the semester becomes a grade of F on the student's permanent record and is then counted as an F in the cumulative GPA.

How the GPA Is Calculated

GPA is computed by dividing total grade points earned by total semester hours counted; only credit hours and grades earned at RVCC count toward the RVCC grade point average.

When a college-level course is repeated, all attempts remain on the permanent record, but only the highest grade earned at RVCC is included in the GPA. Courses graded W, AU or P are not counted as repeat attempts.

The Academic Renewal Program lets a returning student (away at least three years, then completing 12 credits at a 2.4 GPA or better) eliminate all grades earned before the absence from the GPA calculation only; the full transcript record remains, and the option may be used once.

Academic Standing

Good Academic Standing requires both a comprehensive semester GPA and a cumulative college-level GPA of 2.0 or better. Falling below 2.0 first results in Academic Alert; remaining below 2.0 the next term moves a student to Academic Probation, then Academic Suspension, and ultimately Academic Dismissal (a two-year enrollment bar) if the comprehensive semester GPA stays below 2.0 each successive term.

GPA Required to Graduate

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0, both overall and within their program, to graduate. Courses numbered below 100 do not count toward graduation requirements.

Term and Graduation Honors

Dean's List requires a minimum semester GPA of 3.5 in college-level courses (at least 6 credit hours that term, 12 cumulative), with no grade below C. President's List requires all "A" grades in at least 12 college-level credit hours that term, with no W or I grades.

Degrees and certificates with honors require a minimum cumulative RVCC GPA of 3.40, awarded as Cum Laude (3.40-3.59), Magna Cum Laude (3.60-3.79), or Summa Cum Laude (3.80-4.00).

Transfer Credit Limits

Students may transfer up to 45 credits toward an associate degree, or up to 75 percent of the required credits for a certificate program, including credit from other accredited institutions and other approved means; some selective programs limit this further.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at RVCC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at RVCC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
