Grades Not Calculated in GPA

Alongside the standard letter grades, CBC uses several grade marks that carry no grade-point value and are excluded from GPA calculations: I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), Q (Quit/Administrative Drop), CR (Credit), and NC (No Credit). An Incomplete becomes a permanent transcript entry but is not included in GPA math; if the required work is not completed within the following regular semester, it converts to an F.

Grades earned in developmental/college-preparatory courses (course numbers beginning with "0") do not count toward a student's GPA, though they indicate readiness for the next-level course.

How CBC Computes GPA

GPA is computed by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the number of college semester hours attempted. Only credit earned at Coastal Bend College counts toward the cumulative GPA.

If a student repeats a course that cannot be taken for additional credit, only the highest grade earned counts toward the cumulative GPA; the lower grade remains on the transcript in parentheses and the higher grade is marked "R." If a student changes programs of study entirely, only the grades from courses acceptable in the new program are counted in their GPA.

Scholastic Probation and Suspension

A student is placed on scholastic probation for the following semester if their cumulative GPA falls below the minimum required for their semester-hours-attempted classification:

Semester Hours AttemptedMinimum GPA
0-11N/A
12-201.50
21-401.75
41-graduation2.00

A student on probation may not register for more than 13 semester hours in a regular semester (four in a summer session) without Registrar approval, and is removed from probation once their cumulative GPA meets the required minimum. A student who fails to meet the minimum is placed on scholastic suspension and is ineligible to enroll in the program for one regular semester; a suspended student may attend the following summer term but may not register for more than four hours.

GPA and Residency Requirements for Graduation

To graduate, a candidate's grade points earned must equal at least twice the number of semester hours presented for graduation (equivalent to a 2.00 cumulative GPA) -- and grade points earned at CBC alone must equal at least twice the semester hours taken at CBC. At least 25% of the total hours required for an associate degree or certificate must be earned at Coastal Bend College. Degree requirements published in a given catalog remain in effect for five years from a student's entry.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

Students are named to the Dean's List each fall and spring semester if they complete at least 12 non-developmental semester hours, earn passing grades in all courses completed, and earn a semester GPA of at least 3.50 on the 4.00 scale.

Minimum Cumulative GPAGraduation Designation
3.90Graduate with highest honor
3.70Graduate with high honor
3.50Graduate with honor

Transfer Credit Grade Requirements

CBC accepts coursework from accredited colleges, universities, and vocational/military/trade training programs when equivalent courses exist in the CBC curriculum. A grade of "D" or better is required for a transferred course to count toward an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or most Associate of Applied Science/certificate requirements; Allied Health programs require a "C" or better. Courses taken more than five years before entry to CBC may not transfer if the subject's content or technology has changed significantly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at CBC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at CBC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Coastal Bend College (CBC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
