Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) GPA Calculator

VTU uses an absolute grading system: your marks in Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) and the Semester End Examination (SEE) are added together, expressed as a percentage, and read off a fixed table — there is no curve, and your grade depends only on your own marks.

The scale runs from O (Outstanding) down to F (Fail) across eight graded bands, each a clean, non-overlapping run of whole-number percentages covering 0% to 100% with no gaps, so every possible mark maps to exactly one grade. If a course has no SEE component, your CIE marks alone determine the letter grade.

VTU reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) at the end of every semester and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from the second semester onward, both credit-weighted:

• SGPA = the sum, across a semester's courses, of (Course Credits × Grade Point), divided by the total credits taken that semester.
• CGPA = the sum, across every semester's SGPA weighted by that semester's credits, divided by the total credits taken so far.

Both are rounded to two decimal places on the grade card.

VTU's own Regulations state plainly that there is no official formula for converting CGPA into a percentage — but they publish one anyway for employment and higher-studies purposes: Percentage of marks secured, M = CGPA × 10 (e.g. a CGPA of 8.20 converts to 82.0%). This 2022-scheme formula replaced the older (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula that VTU's 2015/2017/2018 and 2021-scheme students still use.

That percentage (M) also sets your degree class:

Passing a course. You need at least 40% of the maximum CIE marks to even sit the SEE, at least 35% of the maximum SEE marks, and your combined CIE+SEE total must reach 40% of the course's maximum marks — VTU's printed minimum passing grade for a course is grade point 4 (the “P” band in the 2022 table).

Moving between years. There's no restriction moving from 1st to 2nd semester. But if your F grades total more than 16 credits across the 1st and 2nd semesters combined, you can't move into the 3rd semester (2nd year) until you clear them. From the 3rd semester onward you can carry an unlimited number of backlog (F-grade) courses forward while progressing — except you must have passed every 1st- and 2nd-semester course specifically before you can register for the 7th semester. You may register for at most 30 credits (regular plus backlog) in any one semester.

Improving a failed course. If you get an F, you must repeat the course; when you re-register and pass, the new grade is based on your marks in that later attempt. If you still fail a non-core course after four attempts, you may drop it for a different course of equal credits — but this substitution is allowed only twice across your whole degree.

Readmission. If you temporarily discontinue and later request readmission, it's granted at the college principal's discretion (not a right), doesn't reset your University Seat Number, and still counts against the same 8-year (6-year for lateral entry) maximum duration for your degree.

VTU doesn't publish a single aggregate CGPA floor for the B.E./B.Tech. degree — instead, you must pass every registered course individually (grade point 4 or above, i.e. at least a “P”), and complete the programme within a fixed time ceiling: 8 academic years for regular admits, 6 years for lateral-entry admits.

You also need to earn AICTE Activity Points before your 8th-semester grade card (and hence your degree) is released — 100 points for regular 4-year admits, 75 for lateral-entry admits, and 50 for students transferred in from other universities to the 5th semester. These points have no effect on your SGPA or CGPA; they're a separate, non-academic requirement. Lateral-entry students must also complete any prescribed bridge courses.

Students who exit early under VTU's Multiple-Entry-Multiple-Exit scheme — a Certificate after 2 years, or a B.Sc. after 3 years — face a separate requirement not tied to the full degree: a minimum CGPA of 5.0, alongside specific credit and core-course thresholds for that exit point.

Honours and Minor degrees. On top of your regular degree's full credit requirement, you need at least 18 additional credits from University-approved online courses to graduate with an Honours or a Minor degree, plus meeting VTU's separate regulations governing each.

Fast-track degree. Students who maintain a CGPA of 9.0 or above in both the 2nd and 3rd semesters (and keep maintaining it) may register for an accelerated course load and complete their coursework in 3.5 years — though the degree itself is still formally awarded at the 4-year mark. Falling below CGPA 9 cancels this fast-track registration automatically.

Ranks. University ranks (per specialization) go to the top CGPA scorers — calculated over semesters III to VIII — among students who passed every course on their first attempt only, were never a repeater for any reason, and finished at a VTU constituent or affiliated (non-autonomous) college. Only 10% of that specialization's appearing students receive a rank, capped at 10 ranks, and at least 10 students must have appeared for a rank to be awarded at all. Ties are broken first by how many semesters had a higher SGPA.

Prizes and medals follow each individual donor's own conditions rather than a single university-wide CGPA threshold.
