How grading works at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

AMU's Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) uses an absolute grading system for theory courses: your letter grade is set by fixed marks-percentage cut-offs printed in the university's own ordinance, not by how your class performs.

The scale runs from O (Outstanding) down to F (Fail) across eight graded bands, on a 0–10 point scale. The lowest passing grade is P, awarded for 35–39 marks out of 100 (4 grade points) — anything below 35 marks is F. An examiner may award up to two grace marks to help a student pass a course, and one grace mark to elevate an already-passing grade.

Three further designations — I (Incomplete), Y (Detained for shortage of attendance), and Z (Withheld/Cancelled) — are administrative markers, not assessed performance levels, and carry no marks band of their own.

How AMU calculates SGPA and CGPA

AMU reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both credit-weighted:

  • SGPA = the sum, across a semester's courses, of (Course Credits × Grade Point), divided by the total credits taken that semester.
  • CGPA = the credit-weighted average of grade points across every course registered since admission.

If a student has registered for a course more than once, the best grade is used when calculating CGPA.

AMU also publishes its own formula for converting CGPA to an equivalent percentage: percentage = 10 × CGPA — this is AMU's own stated rule, not a UGC-wide formula (UGC's own guidelines publish no percentage-conversion rule at all).

Attendance, repeats, and continuation requirements at AMU

Attendance. Students with 75% or more attendance in a course in a semester are eligible to sit that course's End-Semester Examination. Students with 65–75% attendance may seek condonation; below 65% a student is awarded grade Y (Detained, short of attendance) and cannot sit the exam.

Repeating a course. A student may repeat a theory course to try to improve their grade in that course, but only once.

Minimum credits to continue. A student must have earned at least the following credits by each semester, or their admission is cancelled and their name removed from the rolls of the University:

Semester2468101214
Minimum credits10305080110140176

A student removed from the rolls for falling short may appeal to the Vice-Chancellor, who — if satisfied with the reasons — may allow continuation once during the programme, extending its total duration by up to two semesters beyond the normal 14-semester maximum. Under no circumstances may a student complete the programme beyond 16 semesters after admission.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at AMU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at AMU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What is the minimum passing grade at AMU?

The lowest passing grade is P, awarded for 35–39 marks out of 100 (4 grade points); below 35 marks is F (0 points). An examiner may award up to two grace marks to help a student pass a course, and one grace mark to elevate an already-passing grade.

How does AMU convert CGPA to a percentage?

AMU's own formula is percentage = 10 × CGPA. This is AMU's own stated conversion, not a UGC-wide rule — UGC's guidelines publish no official CGPA-to-percentage formula at all.

Can I repeat a course to improve my grade at AMU?

Yes — a student may repeat a theory course to try to improve their grade in that course, but only once.

What happens if I don't earn AMU's minimum credits each semester?

If a student's earned credits fall below the minimum required for their semester (e.g. 50 credits by semester 6, 80 by semester 8), their admission to the programme is cancelled and their name is removed from the University's rolls. A removed student may appeal to the Vice-Chancellor, who may allow continuation once during the programme — extending its duration by up to two semesters, with an absolute cap of 16 semesters after admission.

What CGPA do I need for AMU's Honours with Research track?

A minimum CGPA of 7.5 at the 132-credit mark (end of 6th semester) is required to opt into the "Graduate (Hons. with Research)" or "Graduate (Hons.)" tracks.

How long can I take to complete a degree at AMU?

The Bachelor's (Hons./Hons. with Research) programme takes a minimum of 8 semesters and a maximum of 14 semesters to complete. A student who falls short of the minimum-credit floor may, via a Vice-Chancellor's mercy appeal, extend this by up to two more semesters — but under no circumstances beyond 16 semesters after admission.
