AKTU's B.Tech Ordinance sets an absolute grading system for its Model Curriculum: your letter grade is set by fixed percentage cut-offs published in the Ordinance itself, not by how your class performs — there is no curve, and your grade in each theory, practical, seminar, or mixed-mode course depends only on the marks you personally earn.

The scale runs from A+ down to F across eight graded bands on a 10-point scale — a full letter set with no separate administrative grade for withdrawal or incomplete work. Every band is a clean, non-overlapping run of whole-number percentages covering 0% to 100% with no gaps, so every possible mark maps to exactly one grade.

The University reserves the right to scale or moderate theory, practical, or sessional marks before converting them into letter grades, based on the overall result statistics for that examination — a moderation committee (Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dean UG, Associate Dean UG, and the Controller of Examination) signs off on any such adjustment before results are declared.

AKTU reports three cumulative figures, all credit-hour weighted:

• SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) = the sum, across a semester's courses, of (Credits × Grade Point), divided by the total credits taken that semester.
• YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average) — an AKTU-specific figure calculated at the end of each academic year, credit-weighted across that year's odd- and even-semester SGPAs.
• CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) = the same credit-weighted sum across every semester of the programme, calculated at the end of the final semester and rounded to two decimal places.

For transcript purposes, AKTU also publishes a fixed formula to convert a completed CGPA into an equivalent percentage: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 = Percentage. For example, a CGPA of 8.66 converts to 79.1%.

Failing a subject. A student who scores below the minimum passing grade (E) in a subject is considered failed and must reappear for that subject's examination in a subsequent attempt; sessional marks already earned in that subject are carried forward and don't need to be re-earned.

Carry Over System. A student who has failed papers, or who is retaking theory papers to raise a semester's SGPA to the required 5.0 floor, reappears in those specific papers alongside the regular end-semester examination for that subject in a later semester — there's no separate carry-over exam sitting.

Abandoning a semester's performance. A student may, at their own request, abandon either their end-semester examination performance only, or their total performance (examination plus sessional marks) for one or both semesters of the same academic year. This option is capped at twice across the entire degree, and once a semester's performance is abandoned it cannot be reclaimed. Abandoning only the exam performance lets a student re-sit as an ex-student while keeping their sessional marks; abandoning total performance requires taking readmission for that semester. Students who abandon performance and later clear a paper in more than one attempt remain eligible for their Division at graduation but are not eligible for Ranks or an Honours degree.

Promotion between years. There's no restriction moving from an odd semester to the following even semester. Moving from an even semester into the next academic year's odd semester requires either fully clearing both semesters of that year, or earning at least the minimum credit threshold set for that checkpoint. Students who don't meet this (detained students) can choose to abandon just the semester they were detained in and continue provisionally, or abandon the whole academic year and repeat it.

To complete a B.Tech degree at AKTU you must earn at least 160 credits, with a grade of E or above in every subject of every semester, and a semester GPA (SGPA) of at least 5.0 in each semester of every academic year — falling short of the SGPA floor (with an otherwise-passing set of subjects) allows an improvement attempt in that semester's theory subjects.

Degree programmes have a fixed completion ceiling: 7 academic years from first admission for students who joined in first year, or 6 academic years for students admitted directly into second year through the lateral-entry scheme; a student who fails first year twice is not normally allowed to continue.

Your final CGPA (with all subjects at E or above) sets your Division: First Division for a CGPA from 6.5 up to 7.49, and Second Division for a CGPA from 5.0 up to 6.49. A CGPA of 7.50 or above, combined with passing every subject of the degree in a single attempt with no grace marks and no gap, qualifies for First Division with Distinction (or with Honours, if 20 additional MOOC credits are also completed — see below).

First Division with Honours. Awarded to students who secure a CGPA of 7.50 or above, pass every subject of the degree in a single attempt with no grace marks and no gap, and voluntarily complete an additional 20 credits of University-recommended NPTEL MOOC courses during the programme.

First Division with Distinction. The same CGPA (7.50+) and single-attempt, no-grace-marks, no-gap requirement as Honours, but without the MOOC requirement.

Ranks. Awarded per branch, based on CGPA from first to eighth semester (or third to eighth for lateral-entry students), to students who passed every subject in a single attempt with no repeated or detained semester. The number of ranks awarded in a branch is 10% of the students who appeared for the final semester exam in that branch, or 10 students, whichever is fewer — and a branch needs at least 10 students appearing to award any rank at all. Ties on CGPA are broken first by how often a student achieved a higher SGPA, then by how often they earned higher letter grades.

Medals. Gold, Silver, and other medals are awarded to the top-ranked students in each branch, per University rules.
