NIT Trichy's default grading method is relative (cohort-curved) grading: the institute's Performance Analysis Committee (PAC) sets the grade cut-offs for each course, each semester, based on how that class actually performed — not a single fixed marks-to-grade table published for every course. This applies to "all courses, including Project Work."

The letter-grade scale runs S (highest) down to F (fail) across seven graded bands, each worth a whole-number grade point from 10 down to 0: S = 10, A = 9, B = 8, C = 7, D = 6, E = 5, F = 0. Two further outcomes — X ("Absent for the final assessment") and V ("Prevented from the final assessment due to shortage of attendance") — carry no grade point and play no part in the GPA calculation. The 'S' grade is capped: no more than 10% of students in a theory course, or 20% in a laboratory, industrial-lecture, or project course, may receive it.

A course's pass/fail line is also set per course, not by one institute-wide percentage: the minimum passing requirement is normally the higher of half the class average or 35% of the total weightage, subject to scoring at least 20% in the final assessment.

One narrow exception exists: for a theory course with fewer than 10 students enrolled, the institute applies a fixed absolute scale instead of the PAC's curve — 91–100 = S, 81–90 = A, 71–80 = B, 61–70 = C, 51–60 = D, 41–50 = E, 0–40 = F.

NIT Trichy reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both on the same 0–10 scale as the grade table (S = 10 down to F = 0). Both are credit-weighted:

• SGPA = the sum, across a semester's courses, of (Course Credits × Grade Point earned), divided by the total credits taken that semester.
• CGPA = the same sum across every semester completed so far, divided by the total credits taken across all of them.

A four-credit course therefore pulls your average twice as hard as a two-credit one. At the end of each semester, students receive a digital grade card (via DigiLocker) showing that semester's SGPA; the final consolidated transcript lists every semester's SGPA alongside the overall CGPA and degree classification.

Attendance. Students must maintain at least 75% attendance in each course to remain eligible for that course's final assessment (up to 10% of this may be relaxed for approved On-Duty or medical grounds, with documentary proof). Falling short means you aren't permitted to sit the final assessment at all — you receive a V grade for that course instead of a numeric outcome.

Repeating a V grade. A V grade in a core course must be repeated the next time it's offered, in a subsequent semester or the summer session. A V grade in an elective course can either be repeated the same way, or replaced by registering for a different elective to fulfil the credit requirement.

Repeating an F or X grade. Students who fail a course (F) or are marked absent for its final assessment (X) — outside Minor, Honours, and Online courses — can appear for a Supplementary Examination, which carries 100% weightage over the full syllabus and is graded on a fixed absolute scale with a 35% pass mark. If a student still doesn't clear it, they must keep re-attempting it in later semesters until they pass. In elective courses specifically, an F or X can instead be resolved by de-registering the course once the required elective credits have already been earned elsewhere — but doing so, or otherwise not clearing every course on the first attempt, rules the student out of First Class with Distinction and any Institute Rank/medal, regardless of the CGPA they end up with.

Backlog limit. From the 5th semester onward, a student may not carry more than 22 credits of backlog (failed/pending) courses; exceeding that cap means clearing the backlog before registering for further semesters. Students may also take an authorized temporary break of up to two semesters, from the second year onward, for reasons such as ill health.

To be awarded the B.Tech. degree, a student must meet all of the following: complete every required course in the programme; meet the branch's minimum credit requirement within the prescribed timeframe; satisfy the credit requirements across every course category (GIR, Programme Core, Programme Electives, Open Electives, Essential Laboratory Requirements, etc.); complete the mandatory NCC/NSO/NSS requirement; clear every outstanding due to the Institute, Hostel, Library, and NCC/NSO/NSS; and have no pending disciplinary action — alongside a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 (out of 10).

The B.Tech. programme is designed to be completed in eight semesters. Students are not allowed to exceed twelve semesters under any circumstances (this ceiling excludes any officially authorized temporary breaks).

Degree classification is based on CGPA and how quickly you complete the programme: First Class with Distinction requires a CGPA of 8.5 or above, completing all eight semesters consecutively, and passing every course on the first attempt (authorized breaks don't count against the semester total). First Class covers a CGPA from 6.5 up to (but below) 8.5, completed within nine semesters plus any authorized breaks. Second Class covers a CGPA below 6.5, or completion anywhere within the maximum allowed duration. De-registering even one F/X-graded elective course, or otherwise not clearing every course on the first attempt, disqualifies a student from First Class with Distinction and any Institute Rank/medal outright — whatever their final CGPA turns out to be.

B.Tech. (Honours). To qualify, a student must register for at least 12 theory courses and 2 Essential Laboratory Requirements in the second year, hold an SGPA of at least 8.5 throughout the first four semesters and every semester after (excluding the Honours courses themselves), complete every registered course on the first attempt within four years, never receive a V, X, or F grade in any registered course, meet the standard B.Tech. eligibility criteria, complete 15 additional Honours credits (three 4-credit courses plus one 3-credit course), and earn at least a B grade in every Honours course. Honours course grades do not count toward the CGPA.

Institute Medal. Awarded to the single student with the highest CGPA in the graduating class who completed the programme within the regular duration; a student with the highest CGPA who took an authorized break of study is not eligible for it.
