Permanent Grades and Transcript Symbols
WIU records 14 permanent grades. Eleven indicate successful completion: A (highest), A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and D- (lowest). The remaining three indicate failure to complete a course successfully: F (failure to meet academic requirements), FN (failure due to never attending, accessing, or participating), and FW (failure due to stopping attendance or coursework partway through the term).
Several other symbols may appear on a transcript but carry no honor points and do not affect GPA: I (Incomplete), W (official withdrawal), X (audit), UX (unsatisfactory audit), P (pass, under the Pass/Fail option), S (satisfactory), N (never attended, withdrawal granted by the Council on Admission, Graduation, and Academic Standards), and U (unsatisfactory).

How the GPA Is Calculated
The grade point average is the total of all honor points divided by the total of all credit hours attempted and graded using honor-point-bearing letter grades.
Under the Pass/Fail option, a final letter grade of D- or above is recorded as P and does not affect the GPA; an F earned in a Pass/Fail course is recorded as F and does affect the GPA as usual.
A temporary grade of I (Incomplete) must be replaced with a permanent grade by the end of the ninth week of the student's next semester of enrollment (or within one calendar year if not enrolled in the next two semesters); if it is not replaced by that deadline, it automatically becomes an F (or a U for S/U-graded courses).
