Monmouth University GPA Calculator

Monmouth University uses a plus/minus letter grading system with quality points ranging from 4.00 (A) down to 0.70 (D-); no A+ grade is awarded, and F is recorded at 0.00. Grades of P (Pass), R (Re-Registration Required), T (Transfer), and Q (graduate Waived) are not counted toward a student's cumulative grade point average.

Grade points for a course equal its credit hours multiplied by the grade's value (a 3-credit A earns 12 grade points). The semester GPA divides total grade points earned by credits attempted, excluding withdrawals and developmental courses; the cumulative GPA divides total grade points by total credits attempted at Monmouth, excluding withdrawals, and is rounded to two decimal places. Major GPA includes all courses in the major/interdisciplinary portion of the program.

Students may repeat any course graded F, D-, D, D+, or C- without special permission; repeating a course graded C or higher requires written permission from the department chair and school dean. When a course is repeated, only the second grade is used in the cumulative GPA, regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the first.

A first-semester full-time freshman, or a part-time student with up to 19 credits completed, is placed on academic probation if their GPA falls below 1.50, and considered for academic dismissal if it falls below 1.00. All other undergraduates are placed on probation once their cumulative GPA falls below 2.00. A student is no longer in Good Academic Standing if the cumulative GPA falls below 1.50 after 12 credits, or below 1.80 after 24 credits.

Academic dismissal applies when the cumulative GPA falls below these minimums: 1.00 (12-19 credits completed), 1.60 (19.5-35.5 credits), 1.80 (36-56.5 credits), and 2.00 (57 or more credits).

Undergraduate degrees require a minimum of 120 credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. Students must also meet a minimum major GPA of 2.10 (3.00 for Education majors, 2.75 for Nursing majors) and, where applicable, a minimum minor GPA of 2.10.

The Dean's List recognizes students who fall within the top 20 percent of their major program by semester GPA, provided they have a cumulative GPA above 3.30 and have completed 12 credits that semester. Graduation honors require at least 53 credits earned at Monmouth and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50: cum laude (3.50-3.64), magna cum laude (3.65-3.84), and summa cum laude (3.85-4.00). Department Honors are available in Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, Spanish, Sociology, and Political Science.
