How ASU Calculates Grade Point Average

Angelo State University's overall grade point average is computed by dividing the total number of quality (grade) points earned by the total number of quality hours attempted. Quality hours are hours for which a student registers and receives a grade of A, B, C, D, or F.

Grades of I (Incomplete), P (Pass), W (Withdrew), QW (Withdrew), AU (Audit), CR (Credit), NC (No Credit), NP, and PR are not counted toward the GPA.

Repeated Courses and Official GPA Rounding

A student earns quality (grade) points on the basis of the last grade received in a course at ASU; a course may be repeated without accumulating additional quality hours, though a course that is part of an already-conferred degree may not be repeated for credit.

Official grade point averages are not rounded up.

Academic Probation and Suspension

A student is placed on academic probation at the end of any fall, spring, or summer term in which their Angelo State University Institutional GPA (ASU GPA) is below 2.00, and is removed from probation once the ASU GPA reaches 2.00 or higher.

  • A student already on probation who fails to reach a 2.00 term GPA and a 2.00 ASU GPA in a later term is suspended.
  • First Academic Suspension lasts one long term (Fall or Spring).
  • Second Academic Suspension lasts one calendar year.
  • Third Academic Suspension is indefinite, with readmission barred for 10 calendar years.

Minimum GPA for Graduation

An overall 2.00 grade point average ("C" average) on all college-level work, and a 2.00 GPA on coursework taken at Angelo State University, are required for graduation. All degree programs also require a 2.00 GPA in the student's major field and a 2.00 GPA in the major field in residence.

  • Degrees leading to teacher certification require a 2.75 overall GPA and a 2.75 GPA in the certification content area, interdisciplinary major, and professional education, with no grade lower than "C" in that content area.
  • Integrated programs require a minimum 3.00 GPA overall and a 2.00 GPA in the undergraduate major.

Dean's List

An undergraduate student is eligible for the Dean's List in a fall or spring semester upon completion of 12 or more college-level (non-developmental) semester credit hours in residence, with a semester grade point average of 3.25 or greater in college-level courses. A student earning an "F," "NC," or "I" that semester is not eligible.

Transfer Coursework and GPA

Grades from transferred coursework do not transfer to ASU — only the credit hours do. Transfer work must be a grade of "D" or above to qualify for credit toward degree requirements, except in degrees that have specific grade requirements applying to all students.

When a transfer grade point average is calculated (for admission purposes), grades of A, B, C, D, and F are computed as recorded, "WF" is averaged as an "F," the last grade stands when a course was repeated, and grades in non-transferable, developmental, and some technical/vocational courses are disregarded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at ASU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at ASU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Angelo State University (ASU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
