How GPA Is Calculated

Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total grade points earned by the total units attempted. Courses graded Pass, Fail, Withdrawal (W), Incomplete (I), or Transfer Credit (T) are not included in the GPA calculation.

If a student is required to repeat a course due to substandard academic performance, only the highest grade earned for that course is used in the GPA computation, though all attempted grades remain on the permanent academic record and all attempts count as credit hours attempted for Satisfactory Academic Progress purposes.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), evaluated on a fifteen-week or term basis. To achieve SAP, a student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and complete at least 67% of all attempted credit hours (program of study completed within 150% of its normal time frame).

A student who does not meet SAP at the first evaluation is placed on Financial Aid Warning. Failure to meet SAP at the next evaluation results in termination, unless an appeal is granted, in which case the student is placed on Financial Aid Probation with attendance and advising milestones. Students get a maximum of two appeals for SAP-related termination.

Minimum GPA for Graduation

A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better is required to graduate, consistently across all credential levels offered: the Bachelor of Science degree, the Associate of Science degree, and the Certificate of Completion.

Academic Distinction (Bachelor's Degree)

Academic Distinction is awarded to baccalaureate graduates based on their cumulative GPA for all college work (including coursework from other colleges/universities, excluding remedial courses) as of the end of the quarter preceding their final term:

  • Cum laude: 3.500-3.699
  • Magna cum laude: 3.700-3.899
  • Summa cum laude: 3.9 or higher

This distinction applies only to students completing the Bachelor of Science degree.

Transferability of Credit

The transferability of credits earned at SJVC to another institution is at the complete discretion of the receiving institution, as is acceptance of an SJVC degree or certificate. Students seeking to transfer should confirm with the receiving institution whether SJVC credits will be accepted before enrolling.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at SJVC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at SJVC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
