Clemson University (CU) GPA Calculator

A student's grade-point average is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the total GPA hours attempted at Clemson for the semester, session, or other period being averaged.

An Incomplete (I) is calculated as an F in the GPA until the coursework is finished and a final grade is assigned, normally within 30 days of the start of the next semester. Grades of W (Withdrew), P (Pass), and NP (No Pass) are not counted toward the GPA at all — Pass/No Pass applies only to courses specifically approved to be taken that way.

A course passed with a grade lower than B may be repeated; repeating a D or C does not erase the original grade unless Academic Forgiveness is applied, so absent forgiveness both grades appear on the record and count in the cumulative GPA. Repeating a course passed with B or better removes the repeat attempt's credits and grade points from the cumulative summary. A failed course cannot earn credit until satisfactorily repeated hour for hour; repeating it does not erase the original F unless forgiven.

The Academic Forgiveness Policy lets an enrolled student eliminate up to two courses graded D or F from the GPA calculation. Academic Renewal lets a student who has been away from Clemson for two or more academic years apply for readmission under conditions where prior attempted credits and grade-point deficit no longer count toward a new GPA computation, though no previously passed credit or grade points become usable toward a Clemson degree.

A student whose semester GPA falls below 1.5 is placed on Academic Alert, regardless of cumulative GPA. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 is placed on Academic Probation and is limited to 16 credit hours unless the advisor approves more. A suspended student may not enroll for the following fall or spring semester; a student who returns from suspension and again fails to meet eligibility standards is subject to Academic Dismissal.

A probationary student remains eligible by reaching a 2.0 cumulative GPA, by passing at least 12 graded credit hours with a 2.4 or higher semester GPA, or by meeting the Minimum Cumulative GPA schedule (1.85 for 1-89 overall attempted hours, 2.00 for 90 or more). Students suspended or dismissed may appeal to the Appeals Committee on Academic Eligibility.

A cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 is required for graduation, and candidates must be officially accepted into their degree major no later than the diploma application deadline. Students must also complete a minimum of 37 of the last 43 credits presented for the degree through Clemson instruction (residence requirement), and all degree work is normally expected to be completed within six years of entrance.

Graduation honors require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.70 for Cum Laude, 3.85 for Magna Cum Laude, and 3.95 for Summa Cum Laude.

At the end of fall and spring semesters, undergraduates with a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher on at least 12 semester hours (excluding Pass/No Pass coursework) are named to an Honor List: the Dean's List covers 3.50 to 3.99, and the President's List covers a 4.00 GPA.

Coursework completed with a grade of C or better at other regionally accredited institutions is evaluated for transfer equivalency by the Office of Admissions. Only grades earned at Clemson are used to compute a student's grade-point average for academic eligibility, graduation, and transcript purposes — transfer grades themselves are not averaged in, though qualifying non-remedial transfer coursework is used when calculating GPA for the South Carolina LIFE Scholarship.

Effective June 1, 2022, students graduating with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from a South Carolina public two-year institution are guaranteed at least 60 transfer credit hours and junior class standing at Clemson, though all degree requirements, prerequisites, and minimum-grade requirements still apply.
