Grading Symbols and Special Enrollment Statuses

In addition to traditional letter grades, SJSU uses several grading symbols for special enrollment statuses: CR (Credit), NC (No Credit), AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), IC (Incomplete Charged), RP (Report in Progress), RD (Report Delayed), W (Authorized Withdrawal), and WU (Withdrawal Unauthorized).

Eligible undergraduate students may elect Credit/No Credit grading for approved courses, subject to university limitations; it may not be used for coursework fulfilling major, minor, General Education, prerequisite, or other restricted requirements unless specifically authorized. Certain coursework (fieldwork, internships, projects, individual studies, directed reading, and similar offerings) may be graded exclusively Credit/No Credit.

  • Undergraduate: Credit = A through C-; No Credit = D+ through F, IC, or WU.
  • Graduate: Credit = A through B-; No Credit = C+ through F, IC, or WU. A grade of Credit in graduate coursework represents performance equivalent to a grade of B- or higher.

An Incomplete (I) may be assigned when a student cannot complete required coursework due to unforeseen, fully justified circumstances and there remains a possibility of earning credit. If the agreed work is not completed by the deadline, the Incomplete converts to Incomplete Charged (IC) or No Credit (NC), as applicable. Report Delayed (RD) is a temporary symbol used when grade reporting is delayed by circumstances beyond the student's control; Report in Progress (RP) is used for coursework that normally extends beyond a single term and converts to No Credit (NC) if not completed within university time limits.

Faculty are presumed to have assigned grades correctly; a grade may be changed only for an error in grading, calculation, transcription, or other administrative process, or through the university's grade appeal procedures (Student Fairness Dispute Resolution policy).

How Special Grading Symbols Affect Your GPA

Grading symbols other than standard letter grades do not carry grade points toward the GPA unless the university specifically states otherwise.

  • A W (Authorized Withdrawal) does not affect grade point average calculations and does not indicate the quality of academic performance.
  • A WU (Withdrawal Unauthorized) — assigned when a student stops participating in a course without officially withdrawing and completes insufficient work for evaluation — is treated as equivalent to an F for purposes of GPA calculation and academic standing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at SJSU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at SJSU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this San Jose State University (SJSU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
