Banaras Hindu University's constituent faculties each publish their own examination ordinances; the Faculty of Science's B.Sc. (Hons.) Ordinances describe an absolute grading system — your letter grade and grade point are set by fixed percentage cut-offs in each course, with no adjustment for how the rest of the class performed.

The scale runs from S down to F across seven graded bands, covering 0% to 100% with no gaps. Two administrative grades sit alongside the graded ones: I (non-appearance in the examination) and X (an incomplete Project/Dissertation/Training) are both "treated as F Grade" until resolved.

A separate Grace Rule lets tabulators upgrade an F to a passing grade in limited cases: a student who fails no more than 3 theory courses in a semester, and by no more than half that semester's total theory courses, is awarded grade P ("Passed with Grace") worth 4 grade points in those courses instead of F. Grace is never given to make up a shortfall in minimum SGPA/CGPA or to improve an already-passing grade.

The Faculty of Science reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both credit-weighted:

• SGPA = the sum, across a semester's courses, of (credits × grade point earned), divided by the total credits taken that semester.
• CGPA = the same sum across every semester taken so far, divided by the total credits taken across all semesters.

Credits for compulsory and optional courses (English I/II, Environmental Studies, and similar) are excluded from both calculations. Both SGPA and CGPA are computed to two decimal places, truncated (not rounded) at the second place.

The Ordinances also publish a general CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula:

Percentage of Marks = (10 × CGPA) − 4.5

Attendance. Students are required to have full (100%) attendance; condonation of up to 30% is possible for specific cogent reasons (NCC/NSS camps, university sports or inter-university tournaments, educational excursions, university deputation for a youth festival, or prolonged illness). Of that 30%, 10% may be condoned without a formal application; the remaining 20% is at the Dean/Principal's discretion.

Minimum passing grade in each course is E; a course graded P (Passed with Grace) also counts as passed.

Promotion despite unpassed courses. A student who hasn't passed every course in a semester block can still be promoted to the next semester if their CGPA is at least 4.0 — they get the option to clear the failed course(s) in a later examination as an ex-student.

Repeating a failed course. A student who fails a course gets two more attempts to clear it, subject to a maximum programme duration of 6 years from their latest admission.

To be declared "Passed" after the sixth semester, a B.Sc. (Hons.) student must have passed every course across all six semesters (including the Project/Elective/Field study) and reached a minimum CGPA of 5.0.

Passing candidates are further classified by division:

• First Division with distinction: CGPA 8.5 and above
• First Division: CGPA 6.5 and above, below 8.5
• Second Division: CGPA 5.0 and above, below 6.5

The whole programme must be completed within 6 years of the student's latest admission to the first semester.

University ranking (for scholarships and other distinctions) is given only to candidates who pass every course of the programme in a single attempt. A narrow exception exists for a candidate who could not sit a regular examination in full or in part due to a disruption of the examination itself: if they pass the makeup examination, their marks from that makeup sitting count toward ranking, provided they claim and prove eligibility for this provision.
