Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) GPA Calculator

TIET awards a single letter grade per course on a 10-point scale — there is no university-wide fixed marks-to-grade conversion table students can look up in advance. Instead, an instructor compiles a course's mid-semester exams, quizzes, lab work, tutorials, assignments, and end-semester exam into a course grade, which the Board of Examiners (including one member from outside the department) then finalizes.

Eight letter grades carry a grade point: A+ and A both sit at grade point 10 — A+ is not a higher tier but a rare, selective distinction awarded only within the pool of A-grade students, and only in a class of at least 100 students, subject to Board of Examiners review. A- through C are the remaining pass grades (9 down to 6); E and F are “backlog” (failing) grades that still carry a grade point (2 and 0 respectively). Two administrative grades, I (Incomplete) and X (attendance shortfall/dropped/unregistered), carry no grade point at all.

The minimum passing marks in a written examination is 35 out of 100 in aggregate (the Board of Examiners may lower this case-by-case). Project-based courses with no written exam — Project Semester, Summer Training, Capstone Project, Dissertation/Thesis — instead require a minimum of 50 marks and use their own fixed “Absolute grading” band (A≥85 down to C≥50) that applies only to those course types.

TIET computes CGPA as the credit-weighted average of every grade point earned since a student's entry into the Institute: CGPA = (∑Ci·Gi) / (∑Ci), where Ci is a course's credit hours and Gi is the grade point earned in it. A four-credit course therefore counts twice as much toward CGPA as a two-credit one.

Two grades are excluded from the CGPA calculation entirely: I (Incomplete) and X (attendance shortfall/dropped/unregistered). When a course is repeated, only the new grade is used in the CGPA — the earlier attempt drops out of the calculation, though both attempts stay visible on the transcript.

For transcript purposes, TIET also publishes its own fixed CGPA-to-percentage formula: percentage of marks = 10 × CGPA (on the university's 10-point scale).

BE/BTech/MCA students must clear two CGPA checkpoints to remain enrolled. At the end of year 1: a CGPA of at least 3.70, or (failing that) at least 50% of the first year's credits earned with a pass grade. At the end of year 2: a CGPA of at least 4.50, or at least 60% of the first- and second-year credits earned. A student who meets neither condition at a checkpoint is normally required to leave the Institute, though TIET may allow a one-time, two-semester extension on a signed undertaking from the student and their parents — if the student still hasn't met the criteria by the end of that extension, they are struck off the rolls.

Backlog courses (any E, F, or X grade) can be cleared by re-registering for the course when it's next offered, by sitting a single auxiliary exam held right after the end-semester exam (no classes required, though a course instructor is assigned), or by registering again in the summer term. In the auxiliary exam, a student clearing an E grade can be awarded at most a C grade, and passes either by substitution-based evaluation (the auxiliary marks replace the end-semester marks under the normal grade cut-offs) or by scoring at least 35 marks in the auxiliary exam itself.

CGPA improvement. Any course graded C, B-, or B can be retaken for improvement, subject to faculty availability; the maximum grade after improvement is A-. Scholarship, academic-prize, and gold-medal decisions only ever count a student's first-attempt grade, never an improved one.

Readmission. A student readmitted to first year in the year immediately following their original first year starts entirely afresh — no credit carries over for courses already passed.

TIET's Academic Regulations state degree-award eligibility as a checklist rather than a CGPA number: a student is eligible for the award of degree once they have satisfied all rules and regulations, taken and passed all required courses, paid all fees due, and have no case of indiscipline pending against them. No minimum CGPA is stated as a graduation floor in this requirement — the CGPA checkpoints TIET does publish (3.70 at the end of year 1, 4.50 at the end of year 2) are earlier-stage continuation requirements for staying enrolled in BE/BTech/MCA, not a final graduation threshold.

TIET awards two distinct kinds of academic honors. Annual academic prizes (given each year at the Annual Academic Prize Distribution Function) go to the top AGPA (annual GPA) holder in each discipline/year, provided the student has no fail grade that year and has secured an AGPA of at least 8.00 (10-point scale); a discipline needs at least five registered students for the award to be given at all.

Convocation medals — the President Medal for the overall-highest BE/BTech CGPA, and Institute Medals for the highest CGPA in each discipline/programme — require a minimum CGPA of 8.50, graduation within the normal programme duration (e.g. 8 semesters for BE/BTech), and at least five registered students in the discipline.

Ties are broken first by number of A+ grades earned, then by CGPA, then by percentage of marks in recent coursework, then by entrance-exam percentage — except that any student who earns a perfect AGPA of 10.00 and CGPA of 10.00 is automatically entitled to the medal regardless of any tie-break. Grades earned through CGPA improvement never count toward these honors — only a student's first-attempt grade is considered.

TIET treats incoming and outgoing credit transfer differently. Incoming transfers are only accepted from institutions with an MOU with TIET, or ones separately recognized by TIET's Academic Council for credit transfer. Only courses graded B or higher (or equivalent) are counted toward the receiving student's CGPA at TIET, and a transferring student must still earn at least 50% of TIET's approved-scheme credits to receive a TIET degree. For undergraduates, transfer-in is only possible up to the fifth semester of study.

For outgoing exchange students (TIET students spending a semester or up to two years elsewhere), it's recommended that the student's CGPA be frozen for the exchange period — only the credits earned transfer back to TIET, and a course must be graded at least C (or be fully cleared, for an audit course) to be considered for transfer. Meeting the eligibility conditions does not guarantee a transfer will be approved.
