SASTRA Deemed University GPA Calculator

SASTRA uses an absolute grading system: your letter grade is set directly by fixed percentage bands published in the university's own Rules & Regulations, based on the aggregate marks you score in each course — there is no cohort curve or relative/normalized adjustment anywhere in the document.

Each course is marked out of 100: 50 marks for Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA — the best two of three periodic tests plus assignments/seminars/quizzes for theory courses, or experimental work and viva-voce for practicals) and 50 marks for the end-semester examination. The two are added together and graded on an eight-band scale running from S down to F, plus an administrative E ("Exposure") band reserved for absence. Every graded band is a clean, non-overlapping run of whole-number percentages with no gaps between them.

The lowest passing grade is D, awarded for an aggregate of 50%–54% — a candidate is only declared to have passed a course on securing D or above.

SASTRA reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both on a 0.00–10.00 scale. Both are credit-weighted:

• SGPA = the sum, across a semester's registered courses, of (Course Credit × Grade Point secured), divided by the total credits registered that semester.
• CGPA = the sum, across every semester completed so far, of (that semester's SGPA × credits taken that semester), divided by the total credits taken across all semesters.

A higher-credit course moves your average considerably further than a lecture course — the B.Tech. project alone carries 12 credits, and the M.Tech. (Integrated) project 15.

Attendance and exam eligibility. A student needs at least 80% attendance in a semester to sit that semester's end-semester examinations. Between 75% and 80%, a student may still sit the exam by paying a condonation fee — allowed only twice across the entire programme. Between 70% and 75%, sitting the exam additionally requires a caution deposit — allowed only once across the entire programme, refunded only if attendance recovers above 80% in the remaining semesters. Below 70% attendance, a student is barred from that semester's exam outright and must repeat the whole semester in the next academic year, losing a year; such students may enrol in up to three Dean-approved SWAYAM online courses during the missed semester, and completing them can exempt an equivalent number of elective-course credits.

Repeating a failed course. A student who does not pass a course in the odd/even semester exam must register for and pass it in the next supplementary (arrear) exam. For that attempt, the total marks used are whichever is greater of (original CIA marks + supplementary exam marks) or (2 × supplementary exam marks) — the student's internal-assessment marks are not simply reused as-is.

CGPA-linked privileges. Students who maintain a minimum CGPA and SGPA of 7.5, with no history of F or E grades, may complete their coursework by the 7th semester and devote the 8th semester entirely to project work (the Accelerated Course Registration System). Separately, a student with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 at the end of the 5th semester may register for up to two courses outside the University in place of Department Electives, with Dean and Vice-Chancellor approval.

A B.Tech. degree requires 180 credits, completed over the standard 8 semesters (or 6 semesters, 3rd–8th, for Lateral Entry students). An M.Tech. (Integrated) degree requires 225 credits over 10 semesters. Every individual course must be passed at grade D (an aggregate of 50% or above) or higher — there is no separate, additional CGPA floor to be awarded the degree itself; CGPA instead determines which class of degree a graduate receives.

Each admission route carries its own maximum completion window, with a fallback qualification if it's missed: regular B.Tech. admission must finish within 7 years (a Diploma is awarded instead if the student has met the Diploma's own credit requirement); M.Tech. (Integrated) within 8 years (falling back to a B.Tech. degree); and Lateral Entry B.Tech. admission within 6 years (falling back to a Diploma).

A student who passes every course only after their stipulated number of semesters has elapsed still earns the degree, but with no class awarded — only the CGPA is printed on the certificate.

SASTRA grades graduating students into a class based on CGPA, provided every course is passed within the stipulated number of semesters (8 for B.Tech., 6 for Lateral Entry B.Tech., 10 for M.Tech. Integrated):

• First Class with Distinction — CGPA 7.5 or above, with every course passed in the first attempt.
• First Class — CGPA 6.0 or above (first-attempt passes not required).
• Second Class — CGPA 5.0 or above.

Passing every course only after the stipulated semesters have elapsed forfeits classification entirely — the certificate shows CGPA only, no class.

Distinction-eligible B.Tech. students can additionally graduate B.Tech. (Hons.): on top of the distinction requirements, they must take four extra honours-list theory courses — one each in semesters V, VI, VII and VIII — and pass every one at grade D or higher in its first attempt, within the standard 8 semesters.
