How grading works at PAF-IAST

PAF-IAST follows a Relative Grading system in its scheme of studies: a letter grade is awarded to each student based on their overall academic performance in a course, rather than against fixed percentage cut-offs. Grades are awarded on a scale of 0.00 to 4.00 grade points — the letter grades and their grade points are listed in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

A few conditions can force a specific grade outside the normal relative distribution: attendance below the mandatory 75% in a course makes a student ineligible for the final exam and results in an F (below the withdrawal deadline you cannot simply drop the course — discontinuing it after the deadline results in an F, or a grade based on the percentage of assessments actually attempted).

How PAF-IAST calculates SGPA and CGPA

PAF-IAST reports two averages: a Semester GPA (SGPA) for the courses completed in a given semester, and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all courses completed to date. Both are credit-hour weighted — SGPA is the sum of each course's (grade point × credit hours) divided by the total credit hours attempted that semester; CGPA is the same weighted average taken cumulatively across all semesters.

  • When a course is repeated, both attempts remain visible on the transcript, but only the best grade is included in the CGPA calculation.
  • Q, W, I, IP, and T letter grades carry no grade points and have no effect on the CGPA, though they do appear on the transcript (W = withdrawn, Q = non-credit course completion, I = incomplete, IP = in-progress FYP placeholder, T = transferred credit).

Academic warning, probation, and withdrawal at PAF-IAST

To remain in good academic standing, a PAF-IAST student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00 at the end of each regular semester.

  • Academic warning is issued if a student's Semester GPA in any regular semester falls below 2.00, their CGPA is below 2.00, or they earn an F grade in any course. The warning count resets to zero if the CGPA reaches 2.00 or above after the 1st or 2nd warning.
  • Academic probation follows if the Semester GPA stays below 2.00 for two consecutive regular semesters, or the CGPA falls below 2.00 at the end of any regular semester (students can be placed on probation directly, without a prior warning letter).
  • Academic withdrawal from the program follows if: the CGPA is below 1.00 after the first semester; the SGPA stays below 2.00 for the first two consecutive regular semesters; or the CGPA stays below 2.00 for any three consecutive regular semesters after the first.

Medals and honor lists at PAF-IAST

PAF-IAST recognizes strong academic performance through medals and semester honor lists:

  • Gold Medal — awarded on graduation to the overall first-position holder of each degree program. Eligibility requires passing every prescribed course with no fails, repeats, or withdrawals in any semester, and an SGPA of 3.00 or higher in every semester; ties are broken by highest marks secured.
  • Rector's List of Honors — students who earn an SGPA of 4.00 in a regular course-load semester.
  • Dean's List of Honors — students with an SGPA between 3.50 and 4.00 in a regular course-load semester.
  • Best Project Award — requires an A grade in the Final-Year Project.

A student disqualified by the Disciplinary Committee is not eligible for any academic honor.

How transfer credit affects your PAF-IAST CGPA

Students transferring from another Fachhochschule-model institute or university (subject to seat availability) may receive credit exemption for previously studied courses, but only for courses graded B or above — a GPA of at least 3.00 on the 4.00 scale. No credit is given for a lower grade. Exemptions are capped at 40% of the total credit hours of the degree program, and the Dean of the relevant Faculty must approve each exemption.

Only the credits of acceptable courses transfer — the CGPA earned at the previous institution does not carry over and is not counted toward the PAF-IAST CGPA. The same B-or-above and 40% rules apply to credits earned at other institutions as a visiting student.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at PAF-IAST?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at PAF-IAST?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Pak-Austria Fachhochschule: Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (PAF-IAST) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does PAF-IAST use relative grading?

Yes. PAF-IAST follows a Relative Grading system — letter grades are awarded based on each student's overall performance in a course rather than fixed percentage cut-offs. The letter-grade to grade-point scale is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.
