Grading Symbols

West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) uses a straight A/B/C/D/F letter-grade scale (4.0/3.0/2.0/1.0/0.0) — no plus or minus grades. A separate symbol, "XF" (drop/withdraw failing after midterm), also counts as 0.0 toward GPA.

The following symbols carry no grade-point value and are not calculated in GPA: P and U (developmental courses prior to fall 2002), I (Incomplete), X (drop/withdraw after the official reporting date), S (pass by CLEP/SAT/ACT or other specially approved credit), and IP (thesis/dissertation in progress).

Repeating Course Work

If a student repeats a course at WTAMU, only the best grade earned counts toward the GPA. Credit and grades transferred from another institution do not affect the WTAMU GPA.

A fee is charged for any course attempted for a third or subsequent time at WTAMU, other than a non-degree-credit developmental course or an exempted course.

Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension

Academic status is reviewed at the end of every fall, spring, and combined summer semester. A semester GPA below 2.0 triggers Academic Warning, Probation, or Suspension depending on the student's standing:

  • Academic Warning — cumulative GPA is 2.0 or above but the semester GPA falls below 2.0 (or fewer than 75% of enrolled hours are completed).
  • Academic Probation — cumulative GPA falls below 2.0; removed by raising the cumulative GPA back to 2.0 or above.
  • Academic Suspension — a student on Probation fails to earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or above; a first suspension bars enrollment for two consecutive semesters, a second for three (one calendar year).
  • Academic Dismissal — failure to meet the terms of reinstatement following a second suspension.

Grade Point Deficiency

A student whose WTAMU cumulative GPA falls below the graduation requirement of "C" (2.0 for undergraduates; "B", 3.0, for graduate students) has a grade-point deficiency. This alone does not cause suspension, but the deficiency must be removed before the student can fulfill degree requirements.

President's List and Dean's List

Each fall and spring semester, undergraduates earning a GPA of 3.50 or higher in at least 12 semester hours of non-developmental residence credit (standard letter grades only, no grade of F, XF, or I) are recognized:

  • President's List — 4.00 semester GPA.
  • Dean's List — 3.50-3.99 semester GPA.

Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
