Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) GPA Calculator

UTP grades every course on a letter-grade scale from A down to F/QF — there is no marks-to-grade conversion table anywhere in UTP's own regulations; a grade is defined directly as a letter, with a fixed grade point attached to each letter (A = 4.00 down to F/QF = 0.00). A Qualified Fail (QF) is a distinct fail outcome from a plain F: it's automatically applied when a student doesn't obtain at least 40% in both coursework and the final examination for a course, regardless of the overall combined score — a minimum-component rule layered on top of the letter-grade table.

UTP reports a semester GPA and a cumulative CGPA, both on the 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale:

• GPA = Total Grade Points scored in a semester ÷ Total Credit Hours taken in that semester.
• CGPA = Total Grade Points scored to date ÷ Total Credit Hours taken to date.

UTP's own regulations do not publish a formula for converting CGPA to a percentage — there is no official UTP equivalent of a "CGPA × 25" or similar rule.

UTP checks academic performance every semester against GPA/CGPA bands:

• Dean's List — GPA between 3.50 and 4.00 (subject to the Dean's List conditions below).
• Good Standing — GPA between 3.00 and 3.49.
• Pass — GPA between 2.00 and 2.99. A GPA and CGPA of 2.00 or above is considered satisfactory performance overall.
• Academic Probation — GPA or CGPA of 1.50–1.99 for any semester. Registration is restricted to 9–11 credit hours (at least two of them core courses) unless the Department Chair permits otherwise.
• Academic Probation and Warning — GPA or CGPA of 1.00–1.49 for any semester, or two consecutive semesters on Academic Probation. Same 9–11 credit-hour registration cap applies.
• Academic Dismissal — triggered by any of: two consecutive semesters on Academic Probation and Warning; exceeding the maximum allowed duration of study; a GPA and/or CGPA below 1.00; both GPA and CGPA below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters; or failing every course registered in a semester. Dismissal decisions rest with the University Examination Committee and Senate.

For international students, a CGPA below 2.00 can also affect approval to renew their student pass under Malaysian immigration rules.

Repeating and redeeming courses. A failed course, or one graded Incomplete (I), must be repeated at the next available semester it's offered. Separately, UTP's course redemption policy lets a student retake any course graded 'C' or below (for courses taken since January 2014) once to improve their CGPA — only the best of the two attempts counts toward CGPA, though both attempts still show on the transcript, with the lower attempt marked 'AU' (Audit) and excluded from the CGPA calculation.

To be awarded a degree, a UTP undergraduate must, across all programme tracks:

• obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.00;
• pass all required courses in their curriculum;
• complete the compulsory student industrial internship programme; and
• fulfil all other specified requirements of their programme.

Study duration and minimum credit hours vary by degree track:

• Engineering programmes — up to 7 years of study; minimum 143 credit hours.
• Technology programmes — up to 5.5 years; minimum 123 credit hours.
• Sciences programmes — up to 5.5 years (7 years for Petroleum Geoscience); minimum 128 credit hours (144 for Petroleum Geoscience).

UTP classifies graduating CGPA into Classes of Honours:

Dean's List Certificate — awarded each semester to a student who passes every registered course, registers at least 10 credit hours, and obtains a GPA of 3.50 or above.

UTP's top graduating-student honours are the Chancellor Award (for First Class graduates with the best overall well-roundedness, in Gold/Silver/Bronze tiers) and the Vice Chancellor Award (the top three First Class students per programme, also in Gold/Silver/Bronze tiers).

UTP distinguishes credit transfer with grade from transfer without grade:

• Credit transfer with grade (horizontal only — e.g. changing programmes within UTP, or joining from another institution mid-study): the transferred grade is counted toward GPA/CGPA. Capped at 50% of total programme credits for Engineering/EAC-accredited programmes; for other programmes, no limit when changing programmes within UTP, or a 70% cap when joining from another university.
• Credit transfer without grade (horizontal or vertical, e.g. diploma into a bachelor's programme, or via prior experiential learning/APEL.C): the transferred credit is not counted toward GPA/CGPA — it's recorded on the transcript as an exemption. Vertical transfer is capped at 30% of total credits for Engineering/EAC programmes; for other programmes, the cap scales with how much is transferred — a minimum Grade C is required for up to 30% of credits transferred, and a minimum Grade B for 31–50%.

Either way, a minimum grade of C (or 60% equivalent) in the original course is required, with at least an 80% content/outcome match to the UTP course being credited.
