Universiti Malaya (UM) GPA Calculator

UM grades every course on a fixed, absolute marks-to-grade table set out in its own Academic Regulations — every course is graded the same way, with no curved or relative grading involved. Marks run from 0 to 100 and map onto twelve letter grades from A+ down to F, each carrying its own fixed grade point on a 0.00-4.00 scale.

One UM-specific nuance worth knowing: while every grade down to D carries a positive grade point, the university's stated minimum passing grade for every course is C. Grades C-, D+, and D are officially classified "Gagal" (Fail) in UM's own regulations, even though they still carry grade points of 1.70, 1.30, and 1.00 respectively and still count toward your PNGK (CGPA) — they just don't earn you course credit, so the course must still be repeated.

UM reports a semester PNG (Purata Nilai Gred, GPA) and a cumulative PNGK (Purata Nilai Gred Kumulatif, CGPA), both on the 0.00-4.00 scale:

• PNG = total grade points obtained that semester, divided by total credits taken that semester.
• PNGK = total grade points obtained across every semester since joining the University, divided by total credits taken across all semesters.

PNG and PNGK values may not be rounded without an actual mark amendment on a registered course — the regulations require the exact calculated figure to stand. Not every credit counts the same way: a passing grade (A+ through C) counts fully toward both graduation credit and the PNG/PNGK calculation; a "failing" grade in the C- to F range still counts in the PNG/PNGK calculation (so it still affects your average) but earns no credit toward graduation; a grade-less credit transfer (K or CT(APEL)) counts toward graduation credit but is excluded from the PNG/PNGK calculation entirely, since no grade point exists to include.

Minimum standing. Every student must maintain a PNG and PNGK of at least 2.00 every semester until graduation. Fall below 2.00 in a single semester and you're placed on Academic Observation (probation) the following semester you register, remaining on it until your PNG recovers to 2.00 — your Faculty must notify you of the status and refer you to an Academic Advisor.

Failing out. A student can be terminated from their programme if: they're on Academic Observation and score PNG 1.30 or below for two consecutive semesters; PNGK stays below 2.00 for four consecutive semesters; PNGK falls below 1.00 for two consecutive semesters; the same course is failed (grade F) three times; or the programme isn't completed within its maximum allowed study period.

Repeating and improving. A student who fails a required University/Core course must repeat it until reaching at least the passing grade (subject to the maximum study period) — the best grade point earned is what counts toward PNGK. A student who has already passed a course may still repeat it once, or take extra Elective/Co-curriculum courses, to improve their PNGK — repeats count the best grade, while extra electives count cumulatively.

Absence and incompletes. Missing a final exam without an accepted medical/compassionate reason earns a mark of zero for that component. With an accepted reason, a temporary I (Incomplete) grade is given instead, replaced later by a real grade once a Special Exam or the missing component is completed — a student may not repeat a course while its I grade still stands.

To graduate, a UM student must: achieve a final PNGK of 2.00 or above; complete the credit count set for their programme; meet any Faculty-specific requirements; meet the University's stipulated language requirement; and meet any other requirement Senate approves from time to time.

One historical exception: students admitted in Intake Sessions 2013/2014 through 2016/2017 continue to have their degree-award (graduation) conditions determined under the older 2013 regulations rather than this document — a narrow legacy carve-out that affects graduation-award conditions only, not the grading scale itself, which has applied uniformly to every cohort since 27.06.2024. These regulations also do not apply to Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), or Bachelor of Jurisprudence (Law) students, who follow their own separate programme regulations.

Dean's Award. Awarded for any single semester where a student achieves PNG 3.70 or above, while completing at least 15 credits full-time (minimum 4 registered courses) or 10 credits part-time (minimum 3 registered courses), scoring no less than grade C in every course that semester, and never having repeated a failed course or improved a grade that same semester. A student who also received an I grade that semester is only considered once it's replaced with a real grade; students in an extended study period are not eligible at all.

Honours classification. Every UM Bachelor's degree is awarded "Lulus Dengan Kepujian" (Pass with Honours) once graduation requirements are met, with the class of Honours based on final PNGK (minimum PNGK 2.00 to qualify for the Honours award at all).

Honours (With Distinction). The top classification, "Lulus Dengan Kepujian (Dengan Cemerlang)," requires all of: a final PNGK of 3.70 or above; never having obtained an F grade in any course during the whole programme; never having repeated a failed course or improved a course grade; and completing the programme within its minimum (or Senate-approved) period.

Aegrotat Award. A student unable to complete their programme due to medical reasons or death may be considered for an Aegrotat Award instead of the normal degree requirements, administered under a separate schedule to these regulations.

UM recognizes two categories of credit transfer, treated differently for GPA purposes:

• Credit transfer with grade — for a course at the same qualification level (horizontal) while still actively studying. The prior grade is equated to UM's own grading scale and credit value; both the credit and its grade points count toward PNG/PNGK, as well as toward graduation completion. Must be applied for with the Faculty Dean by the fourth week of lectures in a Regular Semester.
• Credit transfer without grade — covers transfers from a lower qualification level (vertical, for graduates), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL.C), and collected Micro-Credentials. These are recorded as grade K or CT(APEL): the credit counts toward graduation completion but is excluded from the PNG/PNGK calculation entirely, since no grade point is carried. Must be applied for within the student's first two semesters of study.

Both categories share the same minimum bar: the equated result must be at least 50.00 marks, grade C, or grade point 2.00; the prior course(s) must carry equal or greater credit value; content must overlap at least 80% with the UM course (or, for APEL.C, each learning outcome achieved at least 50%); and the prior course must come from a programme accredited by a recognized authority in its own country. Transfer limits then vary by category — horizontal transfers within a student's own field, dual/double-degree programmes, and Mobility Program credits are generally unrestricted (subject to a one-semester residency requirement for external transfers); without-grade vertical transfers from a Diploma or Professional Certificate level, and transfers via APEL.C, are capped at set fractions of a programme's total credits (as low as 1/3, and up to 50% from a Diploma with tiered minimum-grade conditions), unless Senate approves an exception.
