How grades are awarded at MMU

Multimedia University grades every course on a fixed, marks-based scale from F (0%) up to A+ (90-100%), with twelve letter grades in between. Six of those letters — A-, B+, B, B-, C+, and C — are further split into five 1-mark-wide sub-bands, each carrying its own grade-point value that steps up by roughly 0.06-0.07 per mark, rather than one flat value for the whole letter; the other six letters (A+, A, C-, D+, D, F) each carry a single flat grade point across their whole range.

The standard passing grade is D (a mark of 40% or above), effective from Trimester 3 of the 2022/2023 academic year onward. Three professional-body programmes are the exception: Bachelor of Law, Bachelor of Accounting, and Diploma in Accounting require a 50% passing mark instead — a student in one of those programmes who scores in the C-, D+, or D range is recorded as having failed the course, even though the same mark counts as a pass in every other programme.

How MMU calculates GPA, CGPA, and repeat courses

Each trimester's Grade Point Average (GPA) is the Total Grade Points earned divided by the Total Credit Hours taken that trimester. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the same calculation run across every trimester completed so far — Cumulative Total Grade Points divided by Cumulative Total Credit Hours.

A student may repeat a course up to two times. Only the best grade earned across all attempts counts toward the CGPA — lower attempts do not drag the average down — but a repeat requires redoing the full coursework and examinations, not just the exam. A student who still fails a course after two repeats and is dismissed cannot appeal for reinstatement.

Probation and termination at MMU

A CGPA of 2.00 or above keeps a student in good standing ("Pass" status). Falling below 2.00 in a trimester's GPA or CGPA places a student on Probation. A student whose GPA or CGPA stays below 2.00 for two consecutive trimesters is Terminated from their programme.

A terminated student may appeal to the Senate Appeal Committee for reinstatement; if that appeal is unsuccessful, a second and final appeal can be made to the President of Multimedia University.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from MMU

To graduate, a student must complete the number of credits prescribed by their programme with a CGPA of at least 2.00, in addition to meeting their Faculty's own requirements and any further requirements set by the Senate.

Honours classification and Dean's List at MMU

Classification of Honours (on graduation, by CGPA):

  • Bachelor's degree — First Class: CGPA 3.67-4.00; Second Upper: 3.33-3.66; Second Lower: 2.67-3.32; Third Class: 2.00-2.66.
  • Diploma — Distinction: CGPA 3.50-4.00; Credit: 3.00-3.49; Pass: 2.00-2.99.

Dean's List (per trimester, by GPA):

  • Foundation students need a minimum GPA of 3.67, while carrying at least 12 credit hours of graded coursework in a Long Trimester (6 in a Short Trimester).
  • Bachelor's and Diploma students need a minimum GPA of 3.50, alongside a minimum graded credit-hour load for that trimester.

Credit transfer, grade transfer, and exemption at MMU

Credit transferred from another institution must come from a course covering at least 80% of the matching MMU course's syllabus, with a grade equivalent to at least MMU's Grade C. Transferring from a Diploma into a Bachelor's degree (a "vertical" transfer) is capped at 50% of the Bachelor's programme's total credit, and the minimum grade required rises with the amount transferred: Grade C for the first 30% of credit, Grade B for the next 20%. Transfers between programmes at the same level ("horizontal" transfers) and credit awarded for prior experiential learning (APEL) follow their own separate caps.

Grade transfer — carrying both credit and grade forward after a change of faculty or programme — is handled separately from credit transfer and is only available for coursework taken within the five years before the new programme's registration date; students who were dismissed and later reinstated are not eligible for it.

Students who passed Bahasa Malaysia with a credit at SPM level are automatically exempted from the Bahasa Kebangsaan A course, and take a replacement MPU elective instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MMU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MMU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Multimedia University (MMU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do I need to graduate from MMU?

A CGPA of at least 2.00, along with completing the credits your programme requires and any additional Faculty or Senate requirements.

What happens if my CGPA drops below 2.00 at MMU?

You're placed on Probation for that trimester. If your GPA or CGPA stays below 2.00 for two consecutive trimesters, your programme is Terminated, though you can appeal to the Senate Appeal Committee and, if that fails, to the President.

How many times can I repeat a course at MMU?

Up to two times. Only your best grade across all attempts counts toward your CGPA, but each repeat means redoing the full coursework and exams, not just the exam.

What GPA do I need for MMU's Dean's List?

3.67 for Foundation students, or 3.50 for Bachelor's and Diploma students, in that trimester, while carrying a minimum load of graded credit hours.

What CGPA is needed for First Class Honours at MMU?

A CGPA of 3.67 or above for a Bachelor's degree. Diploma students need a CGPA of 3.50 or above for the equivalent Distinction classification.
