Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) GPA Calculator

UPM grades every course on an 11-band letter scale from A down to F, each letter carrying a fixed grade point on a 4.00-point scale (A = 4.00 down to F = 0). The mapping from marks to letter grade is fixed and university-wide, printed as one table in UPM's own Academic Matters for Undergraduates Rules (Fifth Schedule): scores of 80 and above earn an A, while 39 or below is an F, with nine intermediate plus/minus bands (A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D) in between.

A small number of specific programmes — Medical Doctor, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Engineering, and Bachelor of Design (Architectural)/Bachelor of Science Architecture — have their own named variant of this table in their core courses (the Medical Doctor phase and professional examinations, for instance, are graded pass/fail rather than on the grade-point scale). The general table above is what applies to the great majority of UPM's undergraduate programmes.

UPM reports a semester Grade Point Average and a cumulative CGPA, both on the 0.00-4.00 grade-point scale:

• Semester GPA = the grand total of grade points earned that semester, divided by the grand total of credit hours taken that semester.
• CGPA = the total cumulative grade points earned since joining the University, divided by the total cumulative credit hours taken.

UPM also tracks a deficit point figure behind the scenes to decide academic standing: Deficit point = 2 × (total cumulative credit hours taken) − (total cumulative grade points earned). A student with zero deficit points has, in effect, at least a C average; the more credit hours taken without matching grade points, the higher the deficit — and it is this deficit-point count, not CGPA directly, that determines warning and probation status (see below).

UPM's own Rules do not state a formula for converting CGPA to a percentage.

Semester status. At the end of each semester, a student is classed by their accumulated deficit points (see above):

• Good — CGPA of at least 2.000.
• Warning — deficit points below 12.
• Probation — deficit points of 12 or more, or a Warning-status student who fails to bring their CGPA back to 2.000 or above by the end of the following semester. A student already on Probation is terminated if they fail to reach CGPA 2.000 or above by the end of that probation semester.
• Regardless of the above, any student who accumulates 24 or more deficit points is terminated outright.

Repeating a course. If a student fails a course and later passes it on a repeat, the original failing grade is dropped from the CGPA calculation — unless the course was failed more than once, in which case only the first failing attempt is dropped and later failing attempts still count. Separately, a student may repeat a course they already passed, once, with their Dean's permission, purely to improve the grade; the repeat grade replaces the original in the CGPA calculation, though the original grade stays on the transcript. Final-year/final-semester students who fail a course may also apply for a one-time-only special examination, capped at a maximum grade of D (or whatever grade the Senate sets as the passing grade for that programme).

To graduate, a UPM student must pass every compulsory course (or its approved equivalent) for their programme, meet all other requirements set for that programme, and achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.000.

A student who doesn't meet this is ordinarily terminated — but a final-semester student may be granted up to two additional semesters to repeat failed courses, or to take other courses totalling at least 12 credit hours per semester, specifically to raise their standing enough to graduate.

Dean's List. Awarded each semester to full-time students who achieve a semester Grade Point Average of 3.75 to 3.999, provided they have no "TM" (unsatisfactory/ungraded-fail) result that semester, are not repeating any course, have not faced disciplinary action, and are registered for at least 12 credit hours. Grades from a replacement or special examination don't count toward this award. Dean's List honours are recorded on the student's transcript.

Vice-Chancellor's List. The same conditions apply, but require a perfect semester GPA of 4.000. Also recorded on the transcript.

Credit transfer (from a diploma, or from another institution). A course can only be credit-transferred if it was passed with a minimum grade of C (or, for an approved equivalent course, a minimum of C+). The total credit transferred cannot exceed 30% of the graduating credit hours for a Diploma-to-Bachelor move, or 50% for an exchange programme from another institution at the same level of study. A course that has already received credit transfer cannot be re-registered to improve CGPA — it may only be re-registered as an audit course.

Changing programme within UPM. Requires at least two completed semesters, a "Good" status, and a CGPA of at least 2.000. Students on "Warning" or "Probation" status may still apply, but are treated as entirely new students with no course exemptions, and their previous CGPA is not carried forward into the new programme.

Changing major or minor. If a student had failed a course under their old major/minor, that failing grade is replaced by any passing grade earned in the new major/minor group.
