UCSI University GPA Calculator

UCSI University grades courses on a ten-letter scale from A+ (the top band, worth 4.00) down to F (0.00), each letter carrying a fixed grade point -- see the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact marks bands and points. The current scale has been in effect since the January 2024 semester; it replaced an earlier version (in effect from September 2017) that split the middle and lower bands differently, with a separate B/B- tier and separate D+/D- tiers below D.

To pass a course you must clear three floors at once: at least 40% of Continuous Assessment, at least 40% of the Final Assessment, and at least 50% overall. Missing any one of the three fails the course, even if the other two are comfortably cleared.

This grading system applies to the great majority of undergraduate programmes. It explicitly does not apply to A-Levels, Pharmaceutical Science, or Medicine -- these follow external professional-body or examination-board requirements instead, per the University's own handbook.

UCSI University computes a single cumulative measure, CGPA, as:

CGPA = Σ (course credit × grade point) / Σ course credits

using the grade points from the current Grade Legend (Table 13.3). Several categories of courses are excluded from this calculation entirely:

• MQA/JPT compulsory (MPU) courses
• Courses without a grade point (pass/fail, ungraded)
• English Requirement courses (Basic English, English Foundation, English for Tertiary Education)
• Credits transferred in from another institution
• A failed course that was later replaced by a passing attempt -- only the passing attempt's credit and grade point count

UCSI's own handbook does not state a formula for converting CGPA to a percentage -- no such conversion is published anywhere in the document.

Passing a course requires clearing three thresholds at once: a minimum 40% of Continuous Assessment (CA), a minimum 40% of the Final Assessment (FA), and a minimum 50% of the combined overall marks. Falling short on any one of these means a fail, even if the other two are comfortably cleared.

Supplementary exams. If your combined CA+FA total lands at 40-49% and you passed the CA component, you may sit a supplementary exam as a second and final attempt. The supplementary result replaces your final-exam mark, but even if the recomputed total would exceed 50%, it is capped at exactly 50% -- a supplementary pass can never out-score a normal one. Supplementary exams don't apply to fully-coursework courses or to programmes run by overseas collaboration partners.

Withdrawing from a course. You can withdraw up to a set deadline each semester (usually by the end of Week 8). A withdrawn course is marked "W" on your record and does not contribute to GPA or CGPA at all.

Poor academic performance. UCSI's handbook does not print a numeric CGPA probation floor. Instead, "poor academic performance for two (2) or more consecutive semesters" is one of several grounds for termination of studies, triggered through a two-warning-letter process before any termination letter is issued.

Maximum study duration is fixed by credential level: 2 years for a 1-year Foundation programme, 4 years for a 2-year Diploma, and 5/6/7 years respectively for 3/4/5-year undergraduate degree programmes.

UCSI's handbook does not print a fixed minimum CGPA to graduate. The substantive requirement is course-based: you must pass every course prescribed by your programme, re-attempting any failure until it's cleared (final-year projects are generally the exception, submitted only once). On top of that, three administrative conditions apply before your graduation certificate is released: completing the Online Completion Form, completing the MOHE Tracer Study, and having zero outstanding fees.

This is separate from the CGPA thresholds used for Honours classification (First Class, Second Upper, and so on) -- those grade your degree's classification once you've already met the course-completion requirement, they don't gate whether you graduate at all.

Honours classification is based on your final CGPA:

This classification table applies to all programmes except the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, which classify degrees under their own (externally-governed) rules.

Improving a grade. You can repeat a already-passed course graded C+ or C once, to try for a better grade -- subject to your Faculty/Institute/School's approval and within your programme's normal study duration. Only taught or exam-based courses qualify; final year projects, ELE, Co-Op, industrial training, and lab/practical courses are not eligible. The better of the two grades counts toward your CGPA, but repeating a course does not retroactively make you eligible for the Dean's List in the semester you repeated it, even if that semester's GPA reaches 3.67 or higher -- and it cannot be used to bump an already-finalized Honours classification up a tier.

If you transfer credits in from another institution, they count toward your total credit/completion requirement, but UCSI's handbook explicitly excludes them from your GPA/CGPA calculation -- only credits and grades earned at UCSI itself feed your cumulative average.
