Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) GPA Calculator

UTM grades every course on a fixed scale from A+ down to E, out of a 100-mark total, with no curving or class-relative adjustment — the same marks band always maps to the same grade and grade point, for every course, every semester. The exact marks band, letter, and grade point for each grade are shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

Note that A+ and A both cap at 4.00 grade points — scoring above 90 doesn't earn extra points beyond the maximum. As a general rule, D+ is the minimum passing grade for a course; D, D-, and E all count as a fail, though each still carries its own (nonzero or zero) grade point toward GPA/CGPA. Faculties can set a different passing grade for a specific course with Senate approval.

UTM reports a semester GPA and a cumulative CGPA, both on the 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale:

• GPA = Total Grade Points earned in a semester ÷ Total Credits counted for that semester.
• CGPA = Total Grade Points earned across all semesters ÷ Total Credits counted across all semesters.

Courses registered with Audit status (HS) don't count toward either figure. UTM's own regulations do not publish a formula for converting CGPA to a percentage — there is no official UTM equivalent of a "CGPA × 25" or similar rule.

Academic standing is checked every regular semester, based on CGPA:

• Good Standing (KB) — CGPA ≥ 2.00. Students may register 12–18 credits per semester.
• Conditioned Standing (KS) — 1.70 ≤ CGPA < 2.00. Registration is capped at 9–12 credits the following semester. Three consecutive KS semesters results in dismissal.
• Failed Standing (KG) / Dismissed — CGPA < 1.70.

Even a student in good CGPA standing can be deferred or dismissed if a single semester's GPA falls below 1.00 — the Senate may require the student to sit out a semester or assign a KG (dismissal) status regardless of their overall CGPA.

Repeating a failed course. A failed core or general course must be retaken until passed — for CGPA purposes, only the retaken attempt's credits and grade points count; the original failing attempt is nullified. A failed elective can instead be replaced with a different elective; if it is, the original failed attempt's credits/points are not nullified (both stand). A failed minor course does not need to be retaken at all, but its credits and grade points still count toward GPA/CGPA as recorded.

To be conferred a degree, a UTM undergraduate must:

• hold Good Standing (KB) status — i.e. a CGPA of at least 2.00, the same threshold used for good academic standing generally, not a separate higher bar;
• pass all prescribed courses in their programme's curriculum (minimum 120 credits, subject to the specific programme's own Senate-approved requirement);
• complete all five required UTM Professional Skills Certificate (PSC) courses (3 compulsory + 2 elective, non-credit); and
• meet any other University-set conditions.

UTM does not print a degree-classification system (no "First Class"/"Second Class Honours" tiers) — students graduate with a straight CGPA, with the Dean's Honor Medal as the university's only named CGPA-based distinction at graduation (see Honours below).

Dean's Honor Certificate — awarded each semester to students who achieve a GPA of 3.67 or higher while registered for at least 12 credits (excluding audit, compulsory-attendance, and repeat-status courses).

Dean's Honor Medal — awarded to graduating students with a final CGPA of 3.67 or higher who meet all graduation requirements. Both the Certificate and Medal are recorded on the student's transcript.

3.67 is exactly the grade point for an A- (75–79 marks) — so the practical bar for Dean's Honor recognition is an A- average or better across counted courses.

UTM distinguishes vertical transfer (bringing in a diploma or other prior qualification) from horizontal transfer (courses from another programme or institution at the same level):

• Vertical credit transfer (e.g. diploma into a bachelor's programme): capped at 50% of total graduation credits (up to 60% combined with APEL.C/MOOC/micro-credential routes). The minimum course grade required scales with how much is transferred — Grade C for up to 30% of credits, Grade B for 31–50%. Transferred grades are not counted toward GPA/CGPA.
• Horizontal credit transfer (between UTM programmes, or from another institution while still studying, minimum one semester's residency): requires a passing grade of at least C, and the grade is counted toward GPA/CGPA.
• Students who already hold one bachelor's degree and are pursuing a second one may also transfer credits, but those grades are not counted toward GPA/CGPA.
• Combined vertical + horizontal transfer from other institutions cannot exceed 80% of total graduation credits — at least the remaining 20% must be completed in residency at UTM.
