How grading works at Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology

SSUET uses absolute grading on a 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale. Each course percentage falls into a fixed marks band, and every band carries a single fixed grade point — the value depends only on your marks, not on how the rest of the class performed, and it does not rise with your exact mark inside the band. The full band-to-grade-point mapping is shown in the Grade Scale Reference above. This table has applied since Spring 2020 (Batch 2020S onwards), per the Student Handbook.

Before your percentage is matched to a band, any fractional mark is rounded up to the next whole number — for example 60.3 becomes 61, and 59.5 (or higher) becomes 60.

The general passing floor is 50%, equivalent to a D grade and a GPA of 1.0; anything below is an F. Engineering and allied programs require theory and laboratory components of a course to be passed separately. B. Arch program courses have a higher course-passing floor: an aggregate of 60%, equivalent to a C grade and GPA of 2.0.

How SGPA and CGPA are calculated at SSUET

Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA (CGPA) are both computed the same way: the credit-hour-weighted sum of grade points earned, divided by total credit hours — GPA over one semester's courses, CGPA over all courses taken to date.

Both figures are reported to two decimal places. Per the Handbook's own worked examples, a computed GPA of 3.084285 is reported as 3.08, and a computed GPA of 3.065124 is reported as 3.07.

Gold Medal and Merit Position criteria at SSUET

Gold Medals and Merit Certificates are awarded per discipline based on overall CGPA (to two decimal places), to students who pass every university examination — first year through final year — in a single attempt. Three merit positions are awarded per discipline; where a discipline's graduating class has fewer than six students, only one Gold Medal is awarded (with second and third position still earning merit certificates in larger classes). Across the whole transcript, the top ten merit positions are listed when the graduating class is 100 or more, and the top five when it is smaller.

To qualify for the top Gold Medal position specifically, a graduate's CGPA must be at least 3.5. No medal or merit position is granted to a student who passed any examination on a second attempt, and none is awarded on the basis of a CGPA improved after the original result. Ties are broken first by CGPA calculated to five decimal places, and if still tied, by the number of A grades earned in final-year courses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at SSUET?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at SSUET?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What is the minimum passing grade at SSUET?

The Student Handbook sets the general course-passing floor at 50% marks, equivalent to a D grade and a GPA of 1.0; anything below is an F. B. Arch program courses have a higher floor — an aggregate of 60%, equivalent to a C grade and GPA of 2.0. See the Grade Scale Reference on this page for the full band-to-grade-point table.

What CGPA do I need for a Gold Medal at SSUET?

SSUET requires a CGPA of at least 3.5 for its top Gold Medal position, on top of passing every university examination from first year to final year in a single attempt. Medals are not awarded for exams passed on a second attempt or for CGPA improved after the original result.
