How CGPA Is Calculated

Quality points for each course are found by multiplying the grade point earned by the course credit hours; GPA (per semester) and CGPA (cumulative) are the sum of quality points divided by total credit hours attempted.

An F grade remains permanently on the transcript even after the course is retaken and passed. Failing the same course three times leads to cancellation of admission, though the student may be permitted to change major or school instead. An I (Incomplete) is awarded only after at least 75% class attendance plus a valid, strongly discouraged, unforeseen reason; it converts automatically to F if not resolved by the end of the following semester. A W (Withdrawal) may be used a maximum of two times per course.

Retaking a Course

A student may retake a course to improve CGPA within the next four semesters of the original registration; a course must be retaken in the immediate next semester if the grade earned was F or below the minimum acceptable prerequisite grade for the student's School/Department.

Only the latest grade earned counts toward CGPA when a course is retaken. Any given course may be retaken twice only.

Academic Probation

A CGPA below 2.00 places a student on academic probation.

  • If CGPA stays below 1.50 for two successive probation semesters, admission to the University is cancelled.
  • If CGPA is 1.50 or above but still below 2.00, the student continues one further semester on probation and must raise CGPA to 2.00 or above by the end of that third semester, or admission is cancelled.

Minimum CGPA for Graduation

A cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 is required to graduate from all IUB undergraduate programs. Graduation additionally requires a minimum of two academic years in residence and completion of all university, school, major/honours, minor and elective requirements. Individual schools may set higher minimum grade-point requirements for a student's own major courses at the 300 level and above.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

Full-time students with strong semester CGPA are recognized on five honour lists: Dean's List (CGPA ≥ 3.50, any semester), Dean's Merit List (≥ 3.50, second successive semester), Dean's Honour List (≥ 3.76, second successive semester, with a Tk. 5,000 award voucher), Vice Chancellor's List (≥ 3.50, third successive semester), and Vice Chancellor's Honour List (≥ 3.86, third successive semester, with a Tk. 10,000 award voucher).

Graduating students with high cumulative grades, following North American practice, are recognized as Cum Laude (CGPA 3.60–3.79), Magna Cum Laude (3.80–3.94) and Summa Cum Laude (≥ 3.95). The Chancellor's Award, a gold medal, goes to a student sustaining a CGPA of 4.00 across the final four successive undergraduate semesters.

Transfer of Credit

To transfer credit from another accredited institution into IUB, the minimum acceptable grade per course is B- across all Schools/Departments, and the student's overall CGPA at the sending institution must be 2.50 or above.

An admission-test waiver additionally requires at least 30 completed credit hours at the earlier institution, an overall CGPA above 3.00 there, and a grade of B- in the intended course(s).

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at IUB?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at IUB?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
